    I want one of these!

    I've been wanting one of these engines ever since I saw a Cobra beloning to a friend of a friend which was powered by one: the bay 260846216850

    One of the reasons I wanted a Stag (apart from the looks) was that it had a british designed V8 engine in it. I think the only other truly british V8 in our motoring heritage (correct me if I'm wrong someone?) would be the Daimler V8. Sure the Dart and the Mk2 Jags/Daimlers had 2.5L V8s, but if you're going to have a V8 you should do it properly - and by that I mean the Majestic Major engine! I like the turner designed engine - and the rarity of the larger size (I think they made 1000 of them) makes them even more appealing. If I had space I think I would be tempted to buy this just to play with!!

    Lotus twin turbo v8 as fitted to the last Esprits was totally British.Unfortunately that had it's problems while in production :-(

      TVR AJP8 was also a totally British engine V8!

        The Majestic Major had very similar acceleration to the Lotus Cortina. The external dimensions were very similar to the 2.5 litre.

          I wasnt aware of the Lotus engine but had forgotten the AJP8. The latter had amazing bhp/litre as far as I remember. Flat plane crank though so without the V8 "burble"...

            Interesting fact about the turner designed V8 is that both heads are the same, no left and right The head is just reversed for the other side. It a hemi design that is capable of a huge increase from the Std. 220bhp with tunig.

              They had a Majestic Major running chassis at my school to instruct the academically challenged about car maintenance, and some of those favoured in the higher metalwork courses, myself included, were allowed to drive it on the school field - power delivery was sublime, silky smooth, but had a violent tendency to go sideways when prodded a bit hard, as there was minimal bodywork - brought back some fun memories.

                The AJP does sound good in my opinion. The also have amazing pops and bangs on overrun. I followed one last week and until it pulled away from me, I was quite amused to see the small flashes of flame on some gear changes. Pretty close to 100 bhps per litre for one of these. Makes the TV8 seem like a bargain if it goes wrong though!

                  Hi, How about the 4.4L Leyland P76 engine. A long stoke version of the 3.5 Rover. Used in the Australian P76 and a very popular engine in all forms of automotive and marine. 1 chap developed an aero version but in the end the establishment and bureaucracy defeated him. A number of Stags and Range Rovers in Aus. and NZ have had this engine fitted.
