Have I gone too far this time!?

I have decided to have a crack at rebuilding my diff. I have most of it apart now, and nicely laid out in the kitchen !!!

I have printed off Don Kennedy's wonderful description and hopefully I will be able to get it set up correctly. Removing the bearings is proving to be a struggle, but having seen the correct tools used by Ian in rebuilding my hub, I have a bearing separator on order. Hopefully this will make things much easier. Hopefully it is man enough to remove the huge bearing that sits just behind the pinion! I will see how I get on, I might just leave the existing one there.

My first question though - do I need to replace my crown wheel and pinion? I was going to reuse it, but I have just read here: http://clubtriumph.eu/cgi-bin/forum1...?m-1236961211/ that if the teeth are completely polished and shiny then it is worn out. That is the case with mine. No chips, scoring or discolouration though. I don't really want to fork out for a new set unless I have to, but i do want to do a proper job - or at least as good as I can manage!

I have photographed the pinion but it is difficult to photograph my shiny ring. . The teeth cast shadows whichever angle you photograph it from.

Hi Dave. Whereabouts in the diff do the salt and pepper pots fit?!!! Chuckle. Bruce

Hiya Dave as you say, the detail is not too easy to make out, but from that pic, while looking like they've worn very evenly, the pinion teeth do appear to be quite sharp edged. Was there a lot of backlash or noise before you stripped it ? EJ Wards are doing a superior matched set that might be worth a look. Martin.

        Hi Martin,

Yes they are sharp edged, but nowhere near wearing to a point. There was a lot of backlash and whine, which is why I stripped it.

I looked at the websites of the three main suppliers I use, it didn't occur to me to look at EJ Wards. I will do that now!

        Cheers

Maybe just a little more salt, and a splash from the 2nd bottle from the left.....

It's easy to tell the unmarried member..... how many 'shackled' ones would dare have their diff laid out in the kitchen?

Cool, I will look at that when I get home this evening. (It needs to be very soon though, I am planning on taking it to Scotland in a couple of weeks!

                  Cheers

lol. There was a certain amount of mischievousness when I posted that pic! As you say, not many people would be able to get away with it!

Do you have any thoughts on the re-usability of my Crownwheel & Pinion?

                    Cheers

Do you have a casing stretcher to put it back together? I did a Spitfire diff without one so it is possible but the carrier is quite hard to fit in once the side bearing shims are located.
I guess you are replacing all bearings? The set at the rear of your pic (along side the carrier) looks slightly second hand!! They are pretty difficult to remove if my memory serves me right.

                            Hi Neil,

I don't have a stretcher. It levered out without much trouble and I am hoping it will all go back in with a bit of 'gentle persuasion' from a rubber hammer!

The knackered bearing in my pic was my attempt at removing it without the correct tools. I chewed up the shims in the process too. . Correct tools are on the way as I will need to remove the bearing to adjust the shims and I don't want to use a fresh bearing each time!!!

The Quill shaft bearing was the really knackered one, it fell apart!

On the Spitfire diff the side shims were behind the OUTER race not the inner so they were between the outer race and the bearing carrier clamp. That way the bearings dont have to come off the carrier to fit the shims. Just a side issue with all the Spitfires that are still about the diff shims are like rocking horse manure I made some of my own in the end.... phosy bronze shims are not ideal to use with EP gear oils but it was either that or no diff!! Easy decision.
