advice requested for applying 2k laquer over transfers

Hi All

As a favour to a friend I am spraying the fuel tank off his classic trials motorbike. Primer, stopper and basecoat all applied. It's off back to him for some transfers to be applied and then back to me for final laquering. I am concerned about de-greasing the tank after the transfers have been applied. Will panel wipe react with them? Has anyone on here got experience of such things?

Bruce, are you using solvent or water base products? The solvent based panel wipe stands a very good chance of pickleing the transfers (decals), When applying the laquer,the first two coats should only be very gentle dust coats,the third being a normal heavier coat.Hope this helps.

Not quite the answer to the question, but if there are any transparent areas on the transfers, I'd be concerned about applying them to a basecoat. If you mean basecoat in terms of a metallic or water based system, then it is quite matt. This is because the surface is, seen microscopically, rough. When you apply a transfer over this, any clear parts can quickly appear silvery. This is actually the air trapped in the micro pockets of the "rough" finish. In these cases it is better to apply the clearcoat before and after the transfer.

Hi Guys. Thanks for taking the time to reply. I will need to pop out into the garage to see what type of panel wipe it is. I suspect that it is solvent based from its smell. Based on what say about air pockets I will apply 2 coats of laquer before he applies the transfers. I have not seen them so have no idea what they look like. Regards Bruce
