    Eers one for you!

I have the Stag on E-bay and on the advert I have stated a reserve of £6,000, I have had a lot of bids, around 12 and it still has only reached £2050
Why do people bid below the reserve , I do not understand, am I missing something.....................................mayb e a Stag soon!
    Any one any idea?

Because the way eBay works is that bids will start at the minimum and only increase when someone has bid above someone else. So if the current bid is £2050 and I was to bid £6000, eBay would only raise my bid to £2100 (or whatever the next minimum bid is above the last). It would treat my £6000 bid as my maximum, but it wouldn't register higher until someone else exceeded it.

You will either have to be patient, lower your reserve, or re-list with a 'Buy-it-Now' price of £6000.

Frustrating as a seller I know, but that is how it works.

I don't think that's rights Dave, if you bid the reserve, the bid will register. I think people bid below the reserve hoping the seller will panic and drop the reserve.

              Hi Kevin,

Then perhaps they have changed the system. In the past I have tried bidding the reserve for an item I wanted, but didn't win because no-one else joined in to raise my bid above the start bid, so it didn't reach the reserve.

I have used eBay a lot over the years to clear out some spares and bric-a-brac, but am getting a bit pee'd off with the charges. By the time you have paid an insertion fee (unless you take advantage of the occasional 'free posting' weekends) and then 10% of the selling price and PayPal have had their cut (also owned by eBay), what you end up with isn't worth it in many cases.

yep.... thats the usual approach. plus.... if the car never reaches its reserve, after being listed multiple times, the seller may recognise that their reserve is not be realistic

as a medium for selling cars it isn't bad at all - costs about the same as an add in Autotrader, but you don't pay the full cost unless the car sells - which isn't the case with the paper-press.

The problem is that, although you say in the blurb that you have put a reserve on, in an auction the reserve is "secret". That means Dave is right as people will bid whatever they think is right because if it doesn't reach the reserve then you may do a deal with the highest bidder. Kevin is also right as if someone does bid the reserve, then that will show and lift the bar on the bids.

Another way you could have do it if there is a minimum you want to take, was to set the opening bid at that figure which is what I did a couple of weeks ago when I sold the ill-fated Ka. I expect that whatever you do you will get the messages asking what you will take to end the auction anyway.

In my experience, in general its best to set a reserve, and start the bidding low. Even though you sometimes get lots of silly bids, it does send a message to other buyers and watchers that there is a lot of interest, and it helps to sell the item.

For selling a car though, if it is a good one, classifieds can work well; but to sell stags try classiccarsforsale.co.uk

Thank you V Mad, I will try this if I still own her after the auction ends, I do not feel I have to drop my value of her, maybe down to £5500, but that will be it!
If I go any lower I will end up with a rowing boat!
