    Fitting engine & drivetrain

    I initially thought that this would be a no-brainer, but am not so sure……

    I have/had a cunning plan to assemble the engine + gearbox + overdrive and lower the body onto this, thus avoiding the rope & crane balancing acts. I have a hydraulic lift for the car, so that sounded like a neat idea and in my mind would replicate the normal assembly line process.

    My original question was going to be if anyone else has done this and has any recommendations (like fitting the exhaust downpipes before or after etc.)

    On a recent post it has been intimated that the engine won't fit in from underneath.

    Has anyone got an answer or recommendations on this?

    I can do that on the Tiger but unfortunatley I dont think we can on the stag. I measured the width of the engine across the cam covers and it's wider than the width between engine mounts on the chassis.

      Perhaps it's possible to do it before the heads go on? In any case it's sometimes a juggling act to torque down heads on an engine stand on wheels!

        Without the heads on the width should be ok, but the height might be a problem, in which case would then need to remove the suspension cross member.

          I'm guessing that the suspension cross member would, in any case, have to be removed to get the engine in from below with or without the heads.

          Height shouldn't be a problem!

            Drew it will all fit in one unit from the top,get the back of the car as high as you can (not the front as the manual says) and its quite easy..It ballances where i have it in the pic.

              Thanks Steve. I think I'll do it that way then. It just seemed attractive to marry it from underneath as it's less of a balancing act and it's easier to take one's time. I just measured the gap between the engine mounts in the engine bay and the width of the block alone and there is only about 1 cm of clearance so, even without the heads, it would be a tight squeeze.
