I have a very good friend who has lived in England for over 40 years, and speaks perfect English, however was born abroad and lived there until she was 20.
She once told me where (she believed) the word 'bungalow' came from and is totally convinced that her version of the derivation is correct - nothing will convince her she is wrong
. Obviously somebody, for whom she had a lot of respect, had a bit of a laugh with her when she was learning English.
So, what is her explanation of the word 'Bungalow'? Well, the story goes that many years ago builders were building a number of houses but ran short of bricks or stones to complete one. Somebody then came up with the bright idea of making a single story house and said something like 'just bung a low roof on that one'
Corny joke I know but my friend really does still believe it's true
Cheers
Julian
