    Hi.
I have had this in my stag for 30 odd years, does any one have one and know a way to get the carbs to work well?

Yes mine works very well. You will prob find the carb is worn out and needs scraping or reconing depends how bad it is.The spindles wear and get air leaks all over the place so they dont idle very well then. I fitted a webber upgrade from burton power on a decked manifold so it clears the bonnet. Ive got a steel timing gear on it,gas flowed heads, bigger valves, branched manifolds fitted to an original stainless exhaust. It gives my mates 4.5 tvr a good run for its money. I want to get it on the rollers to see what its putting out. Has yours got the conversion plate on that fits to the stag manual box? Ive just fitted a full polly bush kit to mine to its made the drive feel so much better and got rid of the "stag twich" on the corners. I know many on here prefer originality regards engines but I dont spend the whole time of my journey looking at the temp gauge. Power wise "bang for buck" its cheaper to maintain and run to. Do you have any pictures of your engine in the bay? Im a big lover of the essex engine.

Ps think youve posted in the wrong section

If your Essex engine is fitted with the original Weber 38DGAS I can probably sort it for you. I supply almost identical carbs for the Stag engine. What are the symptoms?

Ive seen your conversions looks a very nice bit of kit. Does it give any power increase from a stag standard set up?

Thanks for the compliment. There have been some very good results on various rolling road tests. I notice an improvement in torque on the Weber converted cars I have driven, and the pick up is quicker, probably because the 'chokes' (butterflies) open instantly and extra fuel is pumped in. Check out the feedback on the stagweber website www.stagweber.co.uk and make your own mind up.

I got the original from Essex engines, it has lasted very well, they are a great firm. I have the webber 38 dgms and fitted a repair kit to it. One guy said to cut and blank off the anti stall pipe bit on the webber, done it, after all these years of the same problem, it works great now, I must have asked 100 people about it and at last someone knows about them!! I've done loads over the years and I will take a picture and post the engine bay here. I have the adaptor plate from essex engines in it, one snapped once, but I was canning it!! Anyway, carb, I still have the 'hunting' ( i think its called) when I do a constant 30mph, I have ordered 0.50 idle jets to try out, might work. Also I keep telling the cops, I cant do 30mph, its the carbs not me orifecer!!

Have you first replaced all your plugs and leads with brand new ones? As dodgy plug or lead would cause that. Also are you running points still?? Ive put lumenition on mine best thing I ever did. Would love to know how you snapped the adapter plate mine is a bout 2inch thick ally??

I fitted lumetron ages ago and just fitted a brand new one. Also the leads and plugs are great, tested them with an old spark plug thing where you see the spark colour.

You mean a Gunson colour tune? Not the most reliable of things to use! The plug may be sparking put it could be breaking down at certain rev range when under load. I had a simlar intermitent misfire on mine recently and was down to a dodgy plug. Fitted a new set and ran as smoth as silk. Ive fitted a set of these leads in mine to, expensive but fantastic quality:

You can pick them up a bit cheaper than this if you look about.

Quality and genuine parts means everything. There are even some fake spark plugs around. Replace any suspect ignition parts with parts from www.ldpart.co.uk

You mean buy a V8 set and throw 2 away? Is the king lead the right length?
