    ethanol fuel tank sealing

    Hi,

Ethanol (E5, E10) seems to attack the fuel tank sealants. Does anyone knows if these sealants were used on Triumph Stag fuel tanks?
    Thanks for your reply.

    Hi Rudy,

No sealants were used inside a Stag Fuel tank. Just bare metal. Stag tanks tend to rust from the outside in, condensation builds up between the bottom of the tank and the boot floor.

If you want to seal your tank, this stuff says it is Ethanol resistant: http://www.frost.co.uk/por15-tank-sealer-473ml.html

    Not tried it myself though.

Hi Rudy, as we speak, FBHVC are organising tests of these E10 proofers, I'm waiting for their results before I commit to any of them. Martin.

        Hi StagnJag & martin,
        Thanks for your replies.
I'm writing an article about E5/E10 that will be published in our BSOC (Belgian Stag Owners Club) magazine. In Belgium there is not much commotion about E5/ E10 (E10 is not available yet) The SOC articles about ethanol triggerd me. The article made me find the way to the FBHVC website. That's where I found the item of ethanol attacking tank sealant. I did not know whether I had to mention the item in the article, since I did not know if tank sealant was used in Stag tanks. Thanks to you I know now I can skip the item.

Stagdad posted a pic of the inside of a tank recently. The pic is in this post:

Hi Rudy, don't abandon the artical, E10 also attacks fuel lines, filters, pump diaphragms and carb parts, well worth warning other owners. Martin.

I am working on the theory that if Ethanol causes something to fail, I worry about it when it fails and find a suitable replacement at that point.

Hi Rudy ,as Dave has said no sealant is used its just seam welded around the mounting flange.Just had my head inside my spare one derusting it before modifying it for an EFI pump and then it will get a coat of POR 15 to stop it rusting in the future.

                Cheers Steve
