Just joined the owners club, restoration advice needed

    Hi,

I've just joined the club and am looking forward to becoming a active member however my Stag ownership is in the form of my father-in-laws White 1974 Stag (manual with OD) which he has passed onto me to get back onto the road.

He had it from new and did 116k in it but since the early 90's its been stored in his garage at his house in Huntingdon and collected more than a little dust.

I'm due to get collected by Gary from TRGB who is going to give it a full assessment.

The sills seem to be rusted in places (near the rear wheels) and the boot will need replacing; no doubt more will come to light when its up on the ramps.

As its a very important car to my father-in-law I couldn't sell it and storing it any looking isn't going to do it any good so my only choice is to restore it.

So my first question is where do I have to concentrate my efforts and cash to get her road worthy and what can I 'leave til later'?

Also the is a very nice plate on the car (18 HX) which is on the DVLA records as belonging to the Stag but how do I go about getting the plate back.

    Many Thanks

    Chris

Well you have the best starting point for restoration being a white 74 MOD.

          Cheers Steve

Hello Chris you have already passed what I consider the first major hurdle, and that is choosing your car.
The next if it were mine would be doing whatever is needed to get it into a drivable condition and then using it, carrying out further work as and when finances or time permit to what ever standard you require, My own stag although in a nice condition was purchased to use as much as possible so the slightly worn carpet on one side and some small splits on one seat are annoying but can wait as the car will never be shown.
If you visit the DVLA website they have a page on number plates so the info you need will be on there.....enjoy Steve

It would appear to be a B&Q thing.

Welcome to the club, by the way.

                  Regards

Haha, I'm lucky that it was that image that decided to appear, it could have been anything in 'My Pictures' file!!!

if it's stood that long Chris change the tyres even if they look good the walls will be knackered and dangerous, overhaul the brakes and change the fluid, change the power steering fluid and all engine fluids and make sure the engine turns by hand before cranking it over.best of luck with it.

                        Thanks Peter,

Great advise but I won't be getting it running myself; I#ll leave it to the mechanics at TRGB and when it's running I'll do the easy stuff!!! It's not that I'm not fairly handy with a set of tools I'm just desperate to get the thing on the road as quickly as possible.

One thing that's confusing me is if to modify or not. I've seen the Monarch Stag website and it seems that you can almost turn your Stag into a BMW with
                        various kit and conversions.
