engine start up after 3 years

Hi
New to the forum, after a 3 year break off the road and a back to bare metal re-spray later [ leaving engine and gearbox fitted ], I have started the re-build, replacing all fixings with s/s and all new hoses, clips etc, etc. What do I do before staring up, is it a matter of spark plugs out, drop of oil in each bore then turn over with the fuel disconnected to get some oil everywhere before firing up in earnest. Or something more technical.

I assume you have been regular at turning the engine by hand since it's been stood?,

Yes, but not that often, possibly on twice a year!!!

You can remove the distributor and fit a socket on the oil pump drive (tape it on to the socket extension so you don't drop it)then hook it up to a drill (anti clock) and pump the oil around ,if you have an oil pressure gauge see what you get.Good luck Steve

I reckon you could make nice hat racks out of jack shafts

chuck some redex down the bores first to clear any rusty bits and turn over by hand as much as you can,you may have to prime the carbs with fuel to give the old girl a helping hand when you come to the start up.

I have an oil pressure gauge to fit, that will be the first job then. Plugs out this weekend, see how it goes.

Just an update guys, engine fired up after redex in the bores, sorted the wiring to the fuel pump, and new o rings to the float chambers after fuel leaked out on 1st attempt. And a new battery, sounds great. Gave it a short warm up, now flushing the rad and engine, just waiting for the seats to come back from the trimmers, and new hood and frame following soon, then sort the doors out, MOT booked for end of May. Cant wait to get on the road again. Thanks for the advise.
