fuel tank mod

I was driving around the new forest today enjoying he sunshine when i started wondering if the space under the soft top could be better used.
the idea i came up with is to fit a polythene fuel tank along under the soft top, this would bring the weight forward of the back axle(just) probably give a bigger range as i reckon you could fit a 20 gallon tank in that space and give an even bigger boot. The spare wheel could be stood up at the side and with the original tank removed would give a pretty good space.
the problem is, is this an allowed modification?
Any thoughts.

Go the whole hog and fit an LPG tank, only downside is initial cost and you'd need to keep the old tank or fit a smaller one.

When I fold the hood, I unzip the rear window, without fail ! As I slide it into the well and partly under the back seat, there is no spare space. Martin.

Get rid of the soft top altogether and make it a roadster.
