vehicle ID numbers

Evening gents,
can somebody tell me what the numbers are on two metal tags at the front of the engine bay. The number on the door pillar on my car is LD227620, fair enough this the vehicle vin no but the two under the bonnet are 21960LD and T21902LD. These are on two metal strips rivited to the front panel next to the n/s bonnet hinge.

Hi Marcus. The plate with the T number should be unpainted and is the Body number. The significance of the other plate (painted) is lost in the mysteries of Triumph history. Dave

they were both covered in many layers of paint, i have taken them both off and cleaned the paint off so i could see the numbers. According to the manual pre 73 should have the vin on the door pillar and post 73 where these plates are. okay, so mine is 73 and could have both, but then i would expect the numbers to be the same. the one on the door does look as though it has been tampered with, ie some of the numbers look as though they have been altered but i also remember reading somewhere that there were different numbers somewhere else.

if this the body number i am assuming that it would be different to the vin and that i could use this to trace the vehicle age ( poss tax exempt) as i think the vin is not original.

The VIN on ALL Stags is on the NS door pillar, and is what you need to trace the history. What makes you think that the VIN isn't original? If you read the attachment, taken from 'Original Triumph Stag, The Restorer's Guide' by James Taylor, you will see that the numbers under the bonnet do not match the Commision Number (VIN) but in most cases will be close to one another.
You could get a copy of the factory record from British Motor Industry Heritage Trust. This will list the Chassis Number (VIN), Engine Number, and the Body Number, as well as other details. In the case of my car it lists both the underbody numbers. These are 396 apart, but the closest to the VIN is 1585 away. The VIN is 2663 later than yours.
For info, the last digit of your VIN isn't a 0 (zero) it is an O (letter O - for Overdrive). So your VIN should read LD22762-O.

Re numbers on the stag bodies. The chassis/vin number is as said on the near side door shut on triumph/b.l. plate and was fitted as the car was put on the production line at Canley inorder of production build. Under the bonnet the plate that starts with a T is the sales number and shouldnt be painted as it was put on a finished body after build. The other plate starting with numbers and ending with LD is the body number put on the shell as it was built at Speke in build order. Hope this is of use to all. Very few cars have numbers the same even early ones. Bodies could be stored as Canley for weeks before going down the line.
