    my heater won`t turn off!

Hi all, my heater gives hot air regardless of the setting, not good when we are at 28 degrees today, I assume the problem is the valve, the book says, remove the screw holding the actuating arm , refit the screw and pull the valve centre out with a pair of pliers,
after I`ve drained the system of course! is it really that simple?

    thanks derek

Probably not. If the valve has seized, but the sliding control still moves across the panel, then it is likely that the cable outer sleeve has become detached from its clip on the heater casing. You will need to get down in the footwell with a torch and look behind the fascia and identify the operating cable by sliding the knob across. You will then see where it should be clipped to the casing and what is involved in re-fixing it. The clip is similar to the ones that hold the choke cable outer casings to the brackets on the air intake elbows under the bonnet, but the heater ones are green, not black.

You will also have to free off the heater valve. In addition to what the book says, you could remove the actuating arm and re-attach it the other way round, so that you have something to grip hold of to turn the valve and withdraw it from its housing. Once out, it is a matter of cleaning the valve body, fitting a new o-ring, and reassembling using some suitable grease to lubricate the o-ring.

If I recall correctly, there shouldn't be much water loss, but I would have a container ready to catch any spillage.

      Hi Derek,

i have put a new seal on mine, got great advice on here. you will not need to drain the system at all. firstly have you checked the cable, i took mine out then found out it was the clip on the cable. real pig of a job!
if the slider still moves it could be the clip. it a dash out job i'm afraid.
you will need the seal from LD Parts first, it as simple as taking the screw out and then just pulling it out, catch the water in a large bowl, i used a mixing bowl.
plenty of towels too for the water, renew the seal apply vasaline, well i did, then just put it back together.
      job done

hope this helps if you do a search you should find all the advice i recieved on here

Hi Derek, as Dave says, of course it's possible that the cable has let go and the valve's OK. The clips are green because there's a minute difference between them, the heater cable one, has a tiny point on the inside which grips the outer cable. Has the valve been working recently ? The clips are a bit hard to get hold of, unless of course someone's found a source, either way it's not a major job. I think Russ (Kryten) has a patented solution Good luck, Martin.

Don't panic! You may be able to reach the clip from the footwell end without removing anything. If that fails, try removing the radio and the ash tray, but if doing it this way I recommend using some form of padding on the bottom edge of the ash tray aperture, because if you can get your hand in here, the raw edge will make a mess of the skin on your wrist. You surely don't need to ask how I know......

I have the opposite problem to the sad man - the valve is stuck closed and the slider still moves. However, I think the solution is the same, so thanks for all the advice and I'll give it a go. When I ordered my steering rack, I also included a couple of those O rings, so I'm ready for it. I was going to look at it when I flush out the system, but if it can be done without emptying all the cooling water , then I'll get stuck in soonest.

i bought my clip from LD parts gents, i have a spare as i found the old one when i removed the dash and refitted it, its a finger tip job too, as has been said heater dash out, and squeeze your hand under as Dave has said.

if you need a clip, pm your address and i will post, i only have one though guys so its first come etc

                  Alan

                  ps,
a thought you can turn it manually at the valve as a quick fix

Thanks all, I will give it a go along with sorting out the pdwa warning light and a dodgy replacement rev counter, the drivers door window, the broken handbrake button and a dozen other minor jobs, looks like a busy few weeks!

                      derek

Hi Derek, I've just sussed that you're in Herne Bay, we lived there for a while when I was little, my brother was born there in 1947, in the midst of the legendary bad winter. I believe there are quite a few relatives still there who I've lost touch with. Sorry mate, thinking out loud. Martin.
