    Handbrake Button

Just had a look at my handbrake lever and noticed that the push button is more or less disintegrated and about to fall apart leaving me with a pointy bit of wire to push. (It's the bit on the silver lining thread - http://www.stag.org.uk/forum/showthr...l=1#post157294).

Went to the Rimmers site and found that it is a part which is not sold separately (NSS). Had a check of the parts manual and found that it is part n° 132588.

After checking all of the other usual Stag suppliers, this part turned up as a no-show.

Did a Google and it showed up on the Revington TR site as a remanufactured part. They mention that the cracked button is a common (and sometimes painful!) fault and they have done a mod to prevent it. Got one ordered now. Checking the Rimmers' site again they seem to have this part in stock for Herald and Vitesse. In actual fact, even Revington don't mention that 4-letter Triumph word (Stag).

If the Stag parts manual is correct and the part fits, this seems to be a cheap and simple fix.

Rimmers list it for Herald and Vitesse: http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-132588 and they are quotong as ' In Stock'

It would be interesting too see if it does fit, then it can be added to the Stag lists at all the suppliers. Every little helps.

Buying it is the least of your problems - wait til you try and fit the damn thing!

If you know a way which doesn't involve dismantling your interior please let me know.

        Regards

I've got the bits around the handbrake lever stripped out now for better access

Do you just wiggle that wire and spring into position, or do you have to drill out the pawl rivets or whatever?

          Cheers

I've tried the wiggling around part, with no success whatsover!

So I have had to fall back to "option B" which was to read the workshop manual which states (in not so many words) that it is a real s*d of a job.

I'm psyching myself up to strip out the interior this Sunday.

            Regards

( It was a long time ago ) but I seam to rember that you have to disconnect the compensator rod from underneath and pull the leaver right up passed the ratchet to dis-engage the pawl hook the rod back over the pawl depress the button then return the leaver to the off position reconnect the cable Graham

Thinking about it, you may be able to disconnect the h/brake cable from the lever's ( drum end ) unbolt the lever and pull it up enough to get the clevis pin out trying not to damage the rubber boot

Have been out wiggling my wire in the garage (no, it's NOT an offence!) but no way is it going to come out. However, you can undo the main handbrake lever pivot pin and the whole assembly just falls apart in your hands, sir. Replacement is then easy, but it certainly is easier if you remove the lever from the car! On reassembly, it should be the very last teeth on the quadrants which are engaged with one another.

Took this all apart, Sand blasted the bits. Painted it all put it back together. Thought it was all mundane so never took pictures. Never realized how helpful they may have been. All back in car now. Just need a new rubber hand brake grip. This can be fitted after the event.....

Just got the 132588 from Revington's (very fast and cheap postage to Germany!) and it is a perfect copy of the original, with better finish and a modification to stop the wire ever poking through the button again.
