    Driveshaft spline wear limits?

Hello, guidance needed on howmuch wear is acceptable in the rear driveshaft splines - my stag appears to have done nearly 100,000 on the original looking driveshafts and it does twitch nicely - i notice that if i push the centre gater coverign the splines i can see and hear lateral play about 1/32 to 1/16 inch movement also if i twist the differential end of the shaft there is probably about the same amount of radial play between splines. I do have a an audiable clunk only when pulling away from stationery although this sounds like it is coming from the front of the propshaft and not the drive shafts.

How long should the drive shafts last if never greased - any ideas - should i just scrap them and buy new?

Trouble is you can't by new, you have to sift through secondhand ones and find the best of a bad bunch or get some of the modified units out there.

That's not quite true anymore, you can buy new GKN rilsan coated drive shafts at about £280 each. EJ wards are showing them out of stock at the moment but monarchs or maybe Tony Hart may have them. Rimmers also list a new item that's cheaper but I don't think these are the GKN ones.

That's £280 per pair without the rear hubs.

Comparing pictures from Paddocks and Wards there appears to be more than one type on the market so best to ask exactly what you are getting.

I bought the GKN shafts years ago and can honestly say they are probably the best money I have spent on my car.
