Two heads or one and water pump

    Hi Guys

It's taken me three months to reomve the offside head. I used the rope trick with engine in the car and managed to raise the head about half inch. Then I removed the engine and had to cut the studs. A Tony Hart stud extractor removed three of them but the other two are still stuck fast. I'm told they will need "Spark eroding". The pistons look very good as do the barrels so I'm loathed to try and remove the nearside head.

Is it false economy to replace only one ?

Second problem is how do I get the water pump out. the manual refers to a special tool. Any ides very wlecome.

Tony, after removing the water pump cover the water pump is revealed, it is only a push fit in but the way to remove it is to undo the bolt head (IT IS A LEFT HAND THREAD!!) normally if you still have the jackshft and chains in place it will undo without having to stop the impeller turning (as long as you turn the bolt clockwise)
With the bolt removed I use a flat strip of steel with a hole in the middle the same dia as the bolt and a hole at either end. put the bolt thru the centre hole and replace it loosely back into the pump. Bend the ends of the strip up to meet each other and put the hook of a 'slide hammer' thru the holes in the ends of the strip.
A couple of blows of the slide hammer pulls the pump out. If you are unluckly the pump will pull apart and leave the brass cage and that will need to be pulled out again with the slide hammer.

You will then see what a crap design it is and buy one of Stagdad's external water pump kits and replace the pump with a brass 'bung'

PS if you don't have a slide hammer I am happy to lend you mine (in Twyford)

      Hi Alan.

Does the bolt lift out with the impeller ? I don't have a slide hammer so your offer is gratefully accepted. My email is harley56@talktalk.net if you would like to leave a contact number then I'll give you a call.

      Many thanks

      Tony

The impeller is a push fit on the shaft and the bolt is there as further security. The bolt does not assist in lifting the pump but does act as a handy way of attaching the slide hammer. Sending you a PM with the contact number. - Alan
