Two heads or one and water pump

Hi Guys

It's taken me three months to remove the offside head. I used the rope trick with engine in the car and managed to raise the head about half inch. Then I removed the engine and had to cut the studs. A Tony Hart stud extractor removed three of them but the other two are still stuck fast. I'm told they will need "Spark eroding". The pistons look very good as do the barrels so I'm loathed to try and remove the nearside head.

Is it false economy to replace only one ?

Second problem is how do I get the water pump out. the manual refers to a special tool. Any ides very wlecome.

I have managed to drill out a broken stud but you have to get the hole very central and start with a small drill first.

I dont see the point in struggling to remove the second head unless you suspect it needs work. Unless you know the history of the engine, then the other head may have already been done.

Water pump comes out with a slide hammer; make up your own tool to attach it to the LH threaded bolt. Do a search on the forum; plenty of prevous advice on that.

Personally I'd do both of them for piece of mind. There's 2 options for the water pump the special tool is a type of slide hammer but there's also a bolt with a loop on the top that you screw in and can then prize it out most of the suppliers do them I've only ever needed the bolt.

Thanks guys, I'll try the bolt trick.

My worry about the heads was will there be an imbalance between the two if I only replace one of them. Will the compression ratios be different enough to affect the performance ?
