Seat belt warning light wiring. One for the Electrical Gurus.

Just thinking about the new Mot rules posted earlier.

I think several of us may have problems getting this warning light to work, I certainly will, I left the switch out when I recovered the seat base.

Now over to the electrical gurus on here.

How difficult would it be to have the warning lit until the seat belt is plugged in, but without the seat switch? (is there a switch in the binnacle that could be used?)

    Cheers

Steve, I really wouldnbt worry about this MOT scarmungering. The tester would be sitting in the seat anyway when he tests it, if he tests it.

I think checkling the fuel gauge for accuracy is more important

I'm not worried really, the mot station I usually go to is quite sensible when it comes to testing genuinely looked after older cars, But I would like to get it working just because it's there.

      Cheers

If you cant connect the seat switch just short out the two connectors where the switch plugs into (this is all the switch does). You should find them under the carpet.

Hi Steve, there's is'nt a switch in the drivers seat, so when you turn on the ign that runs a live to the drivers seatbelt binnical and to the switch in the passanger seat when you plug in the driver's seatbelt that breaks the contact (light goes out ) when someone sits on the passanger seat that makes contact the ( light comes on ) pluging in the passanger seatbelt brakes the contact (light goes out ) I don't know if I have explained this very well or even if its of any help. I wouldn't have thought it would be too much of an issue, if the belts have been replaced then the chances of having the warning light on the new ones is remote. It is more a case of safety like airbag warning lights, engine management etc.

My plan is to connect the 'Fasten Seat Belt' light to the door courtesy switches and may be fit a delay (10 sec) timer/relay.

At least the light will come on at the appropriate time.

I have never found a Triumph cct diagram that shows the Fasten Seat Belt wiring and therefore, who would be able to contest its method of operation?

There never was an official wiring diagram for the later cars but in the technical reprints on the SOC website there is a version that someone produced. This is the page showing the seat belt warning.

                Cheers

Well done Julian I'me wrong again typing before thinking live goes to the light and grounds via the contacts in the binnical having said that if you do join the pass seat switch wires togeather the light stayes on all the time unless you keep the seat belt plugged in all the time

My seatbelt light now reads "coolant low" driven by my headertank (copied Kevin Garrod!)

A simple solution for the replaced seat belt light is to wire a timer switch in instead of the seat belt binnacle. The light would then come on as a warning to the driver to fasten the seat belt. It would go out after a few seconds as a matter of course just like my other car.
On my Frontera the seat belt light goes out after a few seconds of starting the engine even if the belt isnt being worn. I only found this out by accident of course because I would never drive intentionally without wearing the belt.
Not a true repair but a workable modification.
