    hood frame catches

I'm going to refurbish my hood frame and after stripping it i have a couple of questions,i've noticed my hood catches are differant to each other and the ones on E-bay are the same as each other one of mine has the hole pitch closer together is there a differance between mk 1 and 2. Second question is should the bars that have the nobs on one on each should they be straight. Thanks in advance for your help.
    Regards

It sounds like you have a Mk1 hood frame, the catches are different. The one on the right hand side is a gravity catch but they dont work very well, which is why they changed on the Mk2 (same spring loaded catch both sides).

If you upgrade to a Mk2 frame you will need to drill new holes on the right side to fit the Mk2 catch.

Sorry, I cant think what the bars with knobs on are?

Hi Trevor, I assume you're talking about the short pins above your head, if so, yes, the strut should be straight, does your hood peak slightly above the door window frame ? if it does, that'll cure it, quite easy to do, the strut unbolts from the frame. Martin.

Ah Martin has it. The bars above the doors that go back to the main hoop should be straight. If they are bent (common problem) it is a sign that the frame needs work; it may just be lack of lubrication making it stiff; this puts extra load on that part and bends it. Make sure the knobs locate correctly onto the next frame member to precent overtravel (peak as Martin mentioned). Lubricate all pivots/bolts on the frame.

Thank lads i will convert to mk2 catches and after powder coating is done i will ream out all holes tap out all threads and lightly grease or would it be better to use vaseline on the bolts then hopefully i will have a smooth operating frame then the challenge of refitting the hood will begin. I've also started reveneering my dash with burr walnut i've covered the clock bit already and it looks good long way to go but they are both winter projects along with about 10 other things. Thanks again hope all your winter jobs go well.

          Regards

Hi Trevor, I'd be inclined to use grease, vaseline is clean and easy but decays fairly quickly, just a thought, good luck, do let us see the new frame. Martin
