    How many restorations

I have just written the next forum article for the mag and a question popped into my head - I was just curious, how many forum users are currently working on restorations? I think there are quite a few at the moment, a good number of which look like they might be back on the road in the spring.

Well there is me for one. Though I think spring is optimistic unless we get a very mild winter as, in this house, I have to work outside and I'm not as hardy as i once was ;-)

Also I am not aiming for a full restoration,I am aiming for a roadworthy car that will then form a solid basis of a rolling improvement program as I can afford to replace the more expensive brightwork and trim.

added: This pic in my avatar was taken in 1989 when I had just finished a major restoration with a professional respray, one day I want it to be better than that, but not concourse, I want to drive it not enter competitions.

Quite! I last drove mine in 1997 but that was only for a summer, prior to that it was in daily use from 1986 to 1991 when i foolishly thought it would be better off the road as I had spent so much time and money restoring it. it got almost no use after that. I reckon I could have driven it from then until now and its condition would be no worse that it got to anyway. This time its going to be my only road car. We have the eurobox for family stuff and my van for work. The Stag is going to do what it does best...... Make me smile!!!!

you will have an even bigger grin when you get to MOT and then drive it! Horrid job getting off old underseal Luckily mine mostly peeled off with little persuasion, though in most cases it came off with a complete skin of oxidised body panel revealing a hole.

I bought my current Stag in April 2003 and I've only driven it off the trailer and into my workshop! Moving here from Canada probably cost me about 3 years when I didn't work on it due to other priorities but it's still taken way too long! I don't think I'll attempt this again - well maybe with something simpler than a Stag.

I have set a tentative target to drive it to next years National event in Malvern. The missus isn't terribly impressed because there wont be much (ANY) holiday money as I have to spend it on the car to achieve that target.

Mine is under restoration too and has been for the last 20 years! At least it's now ready for top coats having been down to bare metal.

There is a bit more pressure now as the eldest is getting married next year and wants to use the car for it!

(And, no Julian, still no more progress!)

                  Cheers,
                  Mike.
Mine since 1987. Finished a 20+ year rebuild in 2012. One of many Triumphs and a 1949 LandRover!

                    Hi Dave,

You've seen mine - a complete nut and bolt job. I started in July '09 with a car that had been under a tarpaulin for six years, which ruined the shell. The new body is my Avatar, which will need to be changed at some point. As it's tax exempt, it'll be on the road before the Spring.

                    Yeee - Haaah!

Mine is also being restored. I'll be very lucky if it's on the road in 12 months time.

I bought my 71 MK 1 three years ago, I have it to where i can drive it on the road but it is now a rolling restoration, Just finished cleaning and polishing/painting a set of alloys now for some tires. I just want a nice drivable car not a trolley dolly at least do not have to worry about the winter months.

                        cheers stuart

Bought mine in December 2009 and only winched it on to the trailer and pushed it into my workshop!

A 6 month quick resto rapidly became longer as each layer of previous ownership was peeled off! Current plan is rolling body by November, exterior paint over Christmas period, engine, gearbox and loom work when the body is at the paintshop, back on the road for the spring snow melt 2012 (April/May). I lost a few months due to inhury, so I reckon a two-year end-to-end is not bad going when you're in full time employment too!

mines been off the road since 93 , i bought all front and rear wings in 97 and started to put it together two years ago ,and i as making such a pigs ear of getting the engine sorted i gave it to a friend of mine who has a garage and he is finishing the bits i struggled with ,the engine runs as sweet as a nut ,and the gearbox goes back and forward , i wanted it desperately for this year ,but it looks like next year now ,it comes home in a couple of weeks and then i will fit the interior and get the spray work flatted , one more winter wont hurt ( much) i am so chuffed the car works now , god knows how much i have spent on her , i cant get the folder out when the duchess is about she,d have a fit , especially the cost of the stainless bumpers ,

Keep going chaps. Mine took me 2.5 years but it was worth it when I took it out for its first proper drive as part of the Forum run on New Years Day. Two family holidays in it plus 3,500 miles so far this year and it still makes me smile

                              Regards
