    Thermostat ?

One for the experts, I've fitted an 88c thermostat, and the old girl now runs 3 to 4 degrees warmer, of no consequence I hear you say, and I agree. I can't recall the temp of the old one. When chatting to "said supplier", I was told they prefer to supply one at 82c, and this may bring it down again. Any thoughts guys and gals ? Martin.

Hi MartinAn 88 I have always regarded as ideal for winter and an 82 for an all year round. Just my personal take on it.

I run 82 all year round. Never found the heater wanting, and warm-up times are fine...

Martin, I run an 88 all year round, no viscous. My temp is fine (LD part sender)

Checked mine during the summer as my car struggled to get warm during the colder months and it was due a coolant flush, stat was fitted by your favorite supplier Martin when they rebuilt my engine, I was surprised to fine a 72 degree stat with no foot on it for closing off the bypass. I replaced it with an 82 degree stat but was worried that the 72 degree one had been fitted to hide a problem. All seems fine though much to my relief.

Hello Martin you do not say if you had a problem caused by the engine running on the cooler side, i have just fitted an 82c thermostat and my temp gauge was and is always below half and the car seems to take an age to warm up and run smooth so i can turn the choke off, the car has always been a bit sluggish in 2nd and fourth but on the hole runs well, the car is tuned up and the choke set correctly, but the unexpected cure was fitting a new fuel pump, the car now is fast in all gears and smooth with the choke on or off, the temp gauge is still below half but i can now turn the choke off much sooner than before, Julian is of the opinion that the old pump was not delivering enough fuel to the carbs, i agree with that.
My point being is that i thought that the car was running cool not allowing the choke be turned off when all the time the fuel pump (found out quite by accident) cured the problem something i would not have thought of in a million years. ...Steve

Sorry Steve, but your original gauge reading means almost nothing, even with the LD Part sender, the gauges are junk box items, only useful as a comparator, no use to show the actual temp, the only proper answer is a decent capilliary gauge ! Glad your lean running was sorted with a new pump, mine's the SU electronic one, never any problem. Martin.

Hi Dave, is your car a MK 2 ? That stat was the recommended one for a Mk1. Martin.

Thanks for the info Martin, the car had a points type pump made in New Zealand loads of age to it with a mind of its own, so i have replaced it with a Rimmer Bros. QH electronic pump....Steve

                    Hi Martin
Mines a Mk2 so I was surprised to find the stat fitted had no foot to block off the bypass, all is well now though and the car warms up quicker and runs cool, Ive fitted a capillary gauge and it sits between 80 and 90 degress most of the time rising to 95 on the hottest of days.

Dave, that is a bit of a surprise. Good news about your temp, a perfect match for mine Would you agree that the gauge is a good investment ? Martin.

Yes I would Martin, certainly takes away all the worrying about the temp reading being correct, mine is a temp and oil pressure gauge combined, I suppose a dual temp gauge would be useful as you could then monitor the temp of both heads correctly.

Mine's the MG type dual gauge, peace of mind ! Two temp gauges could be useful, but some may think it's a step too far, (including me) apart from running out of dash space !
