Dave, are you sure your ancestors weren't themselves French? (or Scandinavian, or German Angles or German Saxons?) and maybe also came uninvited to the island?

Drew, different times, much, much different times. No wellfare state (free) for a start. I know, I know, we would all do the same if we were born in a different country, different time, but enough is enough! You live in Germany, which is probably a better place than the UK, I don't know 'cos I don't live there!!

Not really different times. History just repeats itself. The Vikings, Angles and Saxons all came to Britain for the easy pickings, fertile land etc., and plundered this from the residents at that time. It's simply that the rich pickings now are not arable land but social welfare. The principle is the same. Similarly, every generation thinks a point is reached where enough is enough. How many Brits do you hear saying "I'm not foreign, I'm pure Anglo-Saxon!" ? I believe that Harald's army was primarily Angles and Saxons when they said enough is enough and tried to repel the French in 1066. (Who were, I think, to a great part refugees from Britain who fled to France many years earlier!) It's just one of those cyclic things and every "civilised" country has it. What about all the Brits who, in years past, "invaded" Spain and France, "plundering" the cheap fincas and farmhouses and pushing up the prices for local residents?

As for Germany, I get the impression that people spend more time hammering out everything from Mercedes to submarines to further the wealth of the country and less moaning and griping. It's easy to see why Victor Meldrew comes from Britain !!

Where I live in Tennerife (Costa Del Silencio ) I have a lot of German neighbours and they are all doing a lot of moaning and griping about supporting the rest of europe, plenty of meldrew's over here,And allthough its a great history lesson it has no bearing whats happening in Britian now IMHO. Britian's not being PLUNDERD we are handing out hard earnt taxpayers money to all the dross and nere do well's that set foot on our shores. I have been lucky enough to travel around the world a fair bit and in my experience and this does NOT happen in most civillised countries.Finally there is a point where it needs to be said enough is enough and we have gone way past it. The problem is Britian's far too soft !! try poncing in Spain and see how fer you get Graham,an ex pat I know but I am English and allways will be

Couldn't agree more Graham. As I said, the system is wrong and has been / is being abused. I'm no Victor Meldrew, although I can appreciate that there are those who feel this way and good luck to them, it needs the likes of Victor to balance an otherwise unfair equation and make the rest of us think. It is only by being in the situation I am in that I have to admit (shamefully) that I had no idea that the system was so bad.

If all our "leadership" is concerned about at the moment is using LinkedIn to coonnect more with the people, implement 80MPH speed limits whilst the white van is fighting for survival and lorries will still be limited to lesser speeds and carrier bag legislation is the priority we will continue to be diverted away from the reall issues that sre stifling growth in the eceonomy.

Rant over for now. Back to job searching.

You may be right. I seem to have a peer group of people who are less prone to moan, gripe and blame all the woes on someone else. It's the way I like it, but perhaps it does mean that I have a deaf ear for Meldrews, so to speak.

As to applying the lessons of history to current situations I admit readily that it is a difficult task which not everyone can grasp. That's wha yhistory repeats itself!

From my experience of dealing with German suppliers, they are usually late, very expensive and like the French close for a good part of the summer! The latter point is fair enough if they have delivered the goods on time but not if they have failed and then bugger off on their hols!

I believe the police only transport and hold the "illegals". It is the immigration service that determines the course of action. It is quite normal for them to ask the police to release detainees and tell them to report to the immigration centre office in Croydon. They don't even bother to come and get them.

hi Guys,
i'm just mad about it, Tim is right, the police do just hold them, it should be immigration who take over. i'm going back down again sunday, no Donnington for me either so not a happy bunny at the moment. The police i presume are under staffed as usual, their job is hard enough in this day and age.
i thank you all for the reply's, and the points of view.
The police never turned up, so i presume they informed immigration and thats as far as it has got.

Well I guess we dont have the full information but I am only going by what was said and that is the police didnt turn up after waiting for 7 hours so I assume the company were told that the police would come. If the police dont so that then the Immigration service would have been told. Someone needs to get to the bottom of it and find out who is responsible. I am sure the correct procedure is to first interview and identfiy the immigrants, then if they cant be identified they would take them to a detention centre. They cant just ask them to report if they dont know who they are. These problems just get worse when we shrug it off and accept it, then we have only ourselves to blame.

i will ask Mike on Monday to see what's happened if anything. The last time we had this happen was in Nottingham, they hid in afull load of orange juice from Germany, luckily the main Police response centre is on the same industrial area, so they were there in Minutes. The mess they left. imagine 7 or 8 guys living in the hole they had made inamongst the pallets drinking pure orange for 3 days, living, toileting etc, the whole load was scrapped and we had to get specialist waste people in to clean it all up so as we could use the trailer again, it cost thousands on the insurance.
