MOD propshaft spline wear & vibration

Ive noticed a clunk when pulling away from stationary and it sounds as though its coming from front underneath car also i have a severe vibration that sets in from about 75 to 80mph that feels as though its emminating from centre of car - there is no sign of wheel unbalance - so assume my propshaft which has now done near 100,000 miles is worn, im in process of removing it and i note that the front splines have significant play in them so its probably not just a simple cas of replacing the UJs - overall im thinking its probably not worth hassle of overhaul - i may as well buy a new GKN propshaft probably a paddocks one

any thoughts on how much play is permissible in splines before i consign propshaft to the bin

Hiya, that vibration definitely sounds like UJs, a new prop will cure it, but so might new joints, depends on how much you want to spend. These cars were built in the seventies, by a discontented workforce, and quality control was abysmal, wear in the splines is difficult to quantify so it may just be down to that. If it is splines, you may be looking at a new trans, my choice would be joints first. Martin.

I had a noise at that speed - it turned out to be the quill shaft bearing.

Have removed prop and slight lateral play in front UJ much more interesting was the front splined yoke had been assembled out of alignment with arrows at least 15degrees - definately wouldnt have helped vibration

only very slight play in splines compared to rear driveshaft spline which are quite wobbly

cant detect quilll shaft wearing play

anbody experienced similar vibration due to yoke misalignment?
