    Refirbing Wheels

    Hi Guys

What is my best method for sortingthe lifting laquer on my wheels.

    i'm thinking
    • remove laquer with a blade only to the affected areas
    • cut back corrosion with wire wool or the like
    • relaquer

Am i being too optamistic or should i leave it to the experts?

    Steve

Pic is of the worst wheel and although it looks bad none of the alloy has been pitted yet.

You can do it yourself, but I'd recommend a proper polishing kit to get a good finish and do all the wheel, not bits.Start with a sisal mop (fitted to electric drill) and brown compound to cut back gently to clean metal and then polish with a white mop and blue compound. Takes a bit of time and patience, but with care you can get highly polished professional looking results. You'll also need some vienna lime to clean off the excess polishing compound. Don't use laquer afterwards - just periodically polish to maintain the finish.

Stagdad did you sort your wheels out? If so were the results good as I have to do my wheels which are looking a bit dull but not pitted.

How did it effect the black bits? Did you have to repaint or was there a way of masking off these areas?

Sorry for the questions but your experience might save me time.

              Hi Stuart

I removed the laquer from the non black bits and polished with a polishing kit.

Results were ok as a short term fix ,black bits neen tidying though.

Old thread I know but can anyone tell me how to remove the laquer? Is chemicals or abrasive best?

                Thanks

Hiya Steve, bight the bullett, get the tyres off and use Nitromors to shift the laquer, don't go near them with anything metal, old credit cards will melt after a bit but they do work, and an old stiff paint brush. You'll have a bit of a job getting even small polishing mops into the rims, I've tried, but they're not hard to do by hand, start with 600 wet and dry, then on to 1000, from that point you can start polishing them, first with Autosol, then Meguires NXT Generation, only polish with those disposable paper wash cloths, dry, they have no grain. Hammerite smoothrite with it's own ally primer takes care of the black, and brushes on without marks. Mine were corroded to hell when I got the car, and I did six by hand. - and as seaside bill says, don't laquer them. Good luck. Martin.
