    Insurance whilst restoring car

    Hello folks,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend an insurance company to use whilst my Stag is undergoing restoration. I spoke to my regular insurer who quoted around £45 for off-the-road insurance but one of the conditions was that the vehicle was kept in a locked garage or building. I can't do this where I keep it as it's a car port and neither can I guarantee where it'll be kept at the restorers themselves.

It would appear that the only alternative (with my insurer anyway) is to pay for full on-road insurance, which isn't that attractive a proposition...

    Cheers

    James

Footman James did mine 2008 to 2010. It also covered the car whilst being transported around i.e. from where I purchased back to my house.

Hi Bruce, that's interesting because it was Footman James that I was talking to. The girl I spoke to told me that the insurance would only cover a vehicle if it was not moved under its own power and locked away. I suspect they may have changed their policies.

or, more likely, the person you spoke to was not knowledgable about the exact nature of their policies - try another call and ask to speak to a specialist in this particular type of policy

I have requested a quote from Adrian flux. For both restoration and fully comp when its ready. The car is too far from standard for most companies to even look at. got a quote of over £9K from one crowd last month. Daft

Try PD James. Mine is covered even if parked on the drive.

James, when the car is with a repairer isn't it then covered by their insurance?

                Hi James

My car was incapable of moving under its own power at the time I purchased it as it was minus engine, gearbox, propshafts etc Suggest you give them another call. I can't look up my old paperwork as it was shredded during a clear out earlier this year.

                Regards

Have a word with RH Insurance who provide the club scheme. I have several policies with them and apart from the Stag Insurance, which is governed by the club rules, they have always been 100% flexible and keen to find a solution. My favourite was trying to get them to insure my daughters car for her as a learner. They wouldnt touch it at all, which was a bit of a surprise. I told them that gave me a problem getting the car home and they offered me a days free cover to drive it home!

Have just had my quote from Adrian Flux.... including the modified engine, (cam, carb bigger valves etc.. all listed!) gearbox, alloys, specialised paint job interior mods etc... the quote for fully comp with no no claims is 170 for the year and for laid up during restoration (included accidental damage by me! fire and theft )it only falls to 132.... hardly worth the hassle if its nearly on the road so I am thinking of insuring it from the next month or so fully comp on limited miles for this first year then see where we go from then on.
