Flushed out rad today. Removed bottom hose to release cooled rad flush while laying underneath on opposite side. Pulled it of and ended up getting soaked as it flowed across the bottom gutter at the back of the rad. Ran like a looney up my drive ripping off my tea shirt and then plunged my face into some water as wasn't sure what nasties there might be in it. Anyway I'm here to tell the tale and to advise others that when removing bottom hose do it from above.

Hi, Ethylene glycol is poisonous ( automotive antifreeze), polypropolene glycol is safe (food grade), much more expensive but can be used. Wine makers over the years have used the polypropolene to make the wine go further but some have got it wrong by ignorance or otherwise and used ethylene and killed people. So next time look very carefully at your favourite tipple. Your can't tell, the best senario is you wake up the next morning or change to Whiskey.

Hope you're not giving anyone the impression that there's glycol in Kiwi wines! Didn't the Austrians get into trouble for this some years ago?
I've always found that a kiddies paddling pool under the engine bay is the best way to capture nearly all the fluid.

I have mentioned on here many times that it is not necessary to get covered in coolant when draining the rad. Use a length of half inch tubing inserted in the filling plug and fed to the bottom of the rad and syphon the coolant into a bucket. Nearly all of the coolant can be removed this way meaning no shower when removing the bottom hose. The coolant can then be disposed of responsibly or re-used if appropriate.DaveDave

Hi, I wouldn't know about that, never touch any of the stuff, wine or Champane, New Zealand or otherwise only what I've read. As well as the Austrians, Italians have a record of it to. No trouble standing up down under, gravity keeps us in place. No Gas at the moment, fortunately the plant I work in is coal fired so we are flatout.

I compared the thread with the plug I'd taken out and it looked identical however it just wouldn't screw in to the blockWhen I examined them again I noticed a very slight difference in the thread pattern and so, sadly, fitting them to a later block appears to be impossible - drat !
