    Oil Light

I apologise if this problem has been covered previously but I would appreciate some guidance on the below problem.

I have owned my stag since May and have now noticed the oil light is starting to flicker when the car is idling at about 800 revs. When cold the car is fine but the light comes on at idle when the car is hot.The light then goes off under acceleration. I have changed the oil and filter using Halfords 20/50 classic but no change.

I believe this could be low oil pressure. Is this a terminal problem or is there a less expensive fix?

The car also doesn't seem to pull as she should - could this be a symptom or an un-related problem.

    Cheers

Hiya, welcome to the Stag forum . It could be low oil pressure, but the first thing to do is change the sender for one from LD Parts, in case it's faulty. It's also possible you have a faulty oil pump or pressure relief valve spring. A bottom end rebuild may cost a bit but it's certainly not terminal.
Pulling poorly won't be related to that, more likely ignition timing or carbs out of tune. Good luck, Martin.

      Hi Mogger (real name?),

Welcome to the forum and don't worry too much at this stage as your problem is unlikely to be terminal.

I had exactly the symptoms you describe last year. I assume you haven't got an oil pressure gauge fitted? As Martin says, it's certainly worth verifying if the sender is ok - in my case I fitted a pressure gauge and found out the sensor was correct and my pressure was low.

I was then praying that it was going to be 'just' big ends and main bearings and I'm pleased to say that replacing those cured it (the crank appeared to be in reasonable condition) - together with a refurb of the oil pump.

Are you a reasonable DIYer on your car or not? If so, replacing the big ends and mains, whilst leaving the engine in the car, isn't too bad a job. You've got to drop the front cross member to give space to drop the sump but once that's done then it's pretty straightforward.

So, I'd follow Martin's suggestions first and then, if you're still running a low hot pressure i'd come back on here.

      Good luck. Cheers

Just to pick up on a point that Julian made ditch the clock and fit an oil pressure gauge whatever problems you have now this for sure is esential equipment Graham

          Hi Mogger70

I have had a similar problem, you may find the answers to my question/query in the link of interest to you, I would suggest you sort the problem out as soon as possible to avoid any major damage or expense.

            Guys

Really appreciate your advice with the problem. I have ordered a sender from LD parts further to Martins advice. I will fit this first and see what happens! The car doesn't have a pressure guage, however I notice Tony Hart do a full kit so I will order one!

If this fails where would you suggest be the best place to order the big ends, main bearings and oil pump form - LD parts? I can do the basics with a spanner but I fear replacing the big ends and bearings may be beyond my capabilities! How much would you estimate a garage would charge in labour for this repair?

            Cheers

Hi Andy, ref the gauge, MGB Hive do the oil pressure/water temp one at a good price, if you phone them, they'll happily detail what you need for a Stag, no connection etc. Ref cost, how long is a piece of string, it depends entirely on what they find, most classic garages charge about £40 per hour. Several folk on the forum have jumped in at the deep end and, with help from several experts on here, have done it successfully themselves. Just hang on, one will be along in a minute. Martin.

You won't be able to order any mains or big ends until you have removed the bearing caps to see what is stamped on the back of the bearing, and if you have got this far you might as well finish the job. If the crank itself is worn, then it gets to be a much bigger engine out job, big bills from a garage

The first thing I would do is buy a new oil pressure switch for £5 and see if it remedies the light flicking on,I had a oil light flicking on at tickover on my first stag back in the 80's and a new o p switch sorted it.

Yep. As I mentioned above, I did big ends and mains and if you do fancy trying to DIY then I'll be happy to do my best to guide you on here
