    thare she blows!!

    and the second head comes off, and what a piece of piss it was..GAS PLUS rules.
    I do have to say that judging by the condition of the studs and the ease they came out, they have clearly been off recently.
    More worrying is the discovery of an amount of what can only be described as swarf in, on top and around the valves in the head and lumps of it around the edge of the pot..deffo glad it came off so it can go be machined..dont know if a foreign article got in or not?
    Also small amount coolant sitting in the pot of number 1..me thinks head gasket has failed?
    Could be untold crap in the pots, so dilema number 2......bottom half out, pistons out, new rings and a thorough clean???
    what does any one think??

    well chuffed the head came off tho'...no nuts,bolts sheared, and knuckles in tact....

      That's brilliant Ray, nice one. The water on the pot is probably what came out of the head as you lifted it. Martin.

        Nice one Ray thats the hard part over..

        If you don`t know the history of the engine or it`s been a while since anything was done too it may now be the time to overhaul the whole engine..

          With the engine out of the car the hard work is in getting the heads off, bottom end is relatively easy to strip. Since you have a whole winter to go at it, you might as well strip it down completely. If you are extremely lucky ( I was once with an unknown engine bought from Justriumph) you may find everything is perfect and all you need are new gaskets.
          More likely you will find something that makes you glad you decided to strip it. If the rings are a bit worn I can almost guarantee an oil consumption problem once the heads are done. This is not a stag related problem, most engines will do it as the increased compression causes more blow by on the rings

                  I'm sure he could Martin, but there may a bar involved......

                  But seriously Ray, it would be the best course to take it out, strip it and make sure all else is well, and then you'll have peace of mind - and you will see how a real man's engine goes together....
