    Heater Control Puzzle

I am updating the dash and veneers and thought I would also update the daggy labels on my heater controls. Made up some new labels and when I started peeling off the old ones I notice the original labels are still underneath but some are different! Hot was Cold and vice versa. Fresh and Off also similar. Still relatively new to Stags and to be honest I have found the heater to be ineffectual anyway so am not sure which is correct. Looking at previous posts I see photos of other cars heater controls and there appears to be differences between models. Is this Mk1 vs Mk2 or RHD vs LHD thing?

When I get back in the garage later today it should be easy to work out which is correct so its not a big deal just intrigued why the difference.

David This is what my heater control looks like. Mk 1 with A/C.
Interested to know how you're going to refinish your panel as mine looks pretty tatty and I'm not sure how to pretty it up.

Here's one from a late UK Mk1 RHD

I'm thinking of touching up the silver painted lines around the panel and fortunately the black plastic housing is till in good shape. It was the labels that had faded badly and needed replacing and I just used the old Dymo label maker but was surprised when the original labels underneath were still in good condition but opposite to the faded labels for the LH side control and the top Hot/Cold lever. In practise the LH lever works the opposite to the original label, hence the chnaged label. My 73Mk2 Stag was retrofitted with AC by a previous owner and this flows through the eyeball vents so not sure what other changes have been made to make this work.

It's probably because the seasons are reversed in Australia compared to where the car was built. So antipodean versions got reversed labels on them to make sure you didn't put the heater on in summer.
          The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

The one you are showing is identical to a non- A/C car. It looks like the A/C ones used the same part, with stickers on the front to reflect the different controls.

            Does that sound about right?

Anyone been able to tart one of these up successfully? All the ones on EBay look very second hand.

                Yep

A very good friend of mine does engraving and when I showed him my heater panel as well as all the knobs he jumped at the opportunity.

He slightly deepened all of the markings and, at first, tried to fill them with white paint. I'm sure this would have been ok but he's a real perfectionist and just wasn't happy so he then used some white grouting and the result was excellent. 18 months later they all look as good as when he first did them.

The only think I haven't tried to do is the 'chrome' lining. This looked tatty on my car and with, IIRC, a little white spirit I removed it all - it looks far better as the natural black than the patchy chrome.

I just need to do something about my radio surround now but as I've got a new unit with 'Stag matched' green illumination to go in that's another job that will have to wait a bit.

                Cheers

Nice job on the knobs Julian. I can let him have another set this winter if he wants more practice..........

As for the Chrome/Silver band around the outside of the panel; try using one of those silver pens people use for writing cards, etc. Does the job a treat - steady hand needed.
