adjusting steering

Hello Stag friends,

I have the feeling that there is too much play and "softness" in the steering of my Stag. I know that it is a bit unfair to compare this with the (non-power) steering in my TR6, but the power steering as used in the Stag has always seemed a bit too indirect and "American" to me.

On top of that I realized that when on the road I can move the steering wheel without any direct reaction from the steering. So I would like to adust this.

Can anyone please point out how this steering can be adjusted? Pictures would be great.

You may have some play in the steering knuckles... they would have to be replaced.

there is also this but I would proceed with caution until all other things have been proved to be OK

Thank you for your advice. Why be cautious when tightening the adjusting screw? Can you overtighten it?

Hi Dieter,

when you make this adjustment you are compensating for the wear between the Rack and Pinion gear teeth.It wears in one spot as that is where it spends most of it's time, if you adjust out some of the play in the straight ahead position you may find it becomes tight on a lock making it feel heavy and affect the self centering, although on a stag it's not the best for this anyway.

Another thing to look at is the roll pin in the top of the control valve, Steve "Stagdad" had this problem.

That was my concern...
any play now means something has worn out and I dont think that adjusting screw was made for that purpose. It is for adjusting the play due to manufacturing differences between the rack and the pinion.
