    Manual Gearbox Conversion

This one that may upset the purists, so my appologies in advance, I am a colonial after all so you may not be surprised!

My understanding is that the Stag manual gearbox is similar to the TR6 ie same case, "beefed up" internals and different input shaft length is this so?

If so, it is reasonably common here in OZ to swap the manual TR6 box for a Toyota 5 speed,(there is a conversion kit available in OZ and in New Zealand to achieve this) I am assuming if the Stag's standard OD box is similar to a TR6 then this could work?

Why the purists may ask, well my BW65 auto is pretty stuffed, and not cheap to fix compared to what you pay in blighty. Also manual Stags were very rare in OZ so getting one is going to be tough plus the expense and cost of reconditioning it, not to mention I know nothing about overdrive boxes!

Again assuming the similarity to the TR6 box I'll only have to alter the prop shaft length and fit a manual Stag's pedal box and a few other sundry items.

And what of the ZF auto box conversion that I've read about on the forum, would be nice, but again not easy to source a ZF in OZ and the conversion kit is very expensive when considering currency conversions and freight.

Anybody ever heard of something like this being done?

Yes, it has been done by the Brighton stag specialist a long time ago, and one of our members has a Toyota box to fit a stag in his garage.

I used to have a BW35 in my Stag. When the BW35 started to die after a decade of incontinence I found that converting to a very good rebuilt Man j-type o/d was cheaper than getting the autobox and TQ refurbished. After some trials with crappy clutch feel I am very happy indeed with it.

Toyota 5 speed sounds like a great conversion, shame I didn't know about it a few years back.

Triumph Rover Spares in Adelaide supplied my Supra box + all the various bits & pieces I needed. Might be worth giving them a ring to see if they could do a ZF conversion...........?

                        Thanks Neil,

Contacted Triumph Rover Spares as per your suggestion (thanks), they can supply only a bell housing and gearbox to fit the Triumph V8, the rest I would have to engineer myself, would be OK if I lived in SA as I could take a look at some of the Stags they have done previously. However as I'm "way up North" I'm really looking for a "complete kit" that can be installed without any "engineering"

                        Cheers,

                        Mark

I looked into this a few years ago. There was a Kiwi company doing Supra or Celica conversions but they did not do one or the Stag-I can't seem to find them on-line anymore. RWD Supras were still made until quite recently so availability should be okay. I decided to go with the Triumph MOD box as the cheapest conversion. Originality played a part in my decision but a Toyota box would be more " fit and forget".
