How do i get shocks out?

Just picked up a pair of front struts to refirb .I want to remove the shock insertandlooked in the ROM and it says refer to section 60.20.01 sheet 2 which i guess is an amendment which i don't seem to have.

Anywho i'm sure one of you must have done this job before .looks as if i need a tool to locate in the 4 holes, is this right.

    Cheers Steve

You only need a tool that locates in two of the holes- it's not difficult to fabricat a 'Y' shaped tool with a pin in each end.

I've always used a hammer and punch to undo it as I didn't need to re-use the nut. The holes needs to be unstaked first. The nutmay be quite tight.

And if they are the original fittings be prepared for the oil to pour out.

I've used a blunt punch and a hammer to undo the nuts on the strut, but I found a sort of locking section where the casing was hammered into the nut - tap this out first.

        Hi Steve,

depending on the type you have, you may be able to undo it with some circlip pliers, section 60.20.01 doesn't really describe its' removal in any specific steps, i can scan/email the pages if you like, its the section entitled 'Front Road Spring'

        cheers...........Andy

          Excellent Pete

Thats what i thought, but thought i'd ask first rather than butcher something.

          Cheers Steve

My mate cuts the old strut off near the bottom (angle grinder), pushes the remainder into the hole thus leaving the end cap exposed to whatever tools you want to use on it. Reckons its a lot easier to get at the cap without damaging the housing.

I haven't tried this but had a lot of trouble with punches etc moving the cap and damaged the top of the housing in the process.

I can put this one to bed.

Got it out but no way was it going to move with normal circliip pliers or the like .tried a grinder spanner still no good .wouldn't budge hitting it with a punch in the indents ,so i drilled a line of holesin the nut and split it so it could shrink slightly then knocked round with a punch and yes it was original with oil spilling out (Thanks for the heads up Pete).

              Thanks for all your ideas

Found an ajustable pin spanner on ebay, hoping that aid replacement of new nut.
