    Brake Pad fitting???

Having fitted new brake calipers, I then fitted some new brake pads and was surprised to find that the pads were not held in exact position by the caliper! I expected the brake pads to not to be able to be rotated when fitted with only the clips providing a degree of support. I already sent the old calipers back so cannot compare. On my Tiger the pads are located squarely and cannot rotate.

Maybe its normal on the stag and I didnt notice last time I did this job?

(calipers were from a reputable source, pads are boxed Halfrauds HBP370)

Quite normal, but maybe you didn't see it last time because of the cloaking device you have engaged.....

It's quite the norm on Motorcycles as well, if you touch the brakes when pushing the bike backwards you have quite loud clonk.

Carbon Nanotubes were electrically stimulated to bend light rays away from the object behind the cloaking device, leading to total invisibility

                Ian.
Ian, its not just that the pad moves up and down, they can twist as well on theri own centres.

I have the split pin fixings as opposed to the solid pin and R-clip which I have also seen but I think I will get some solid pins now that I know the pads can flap around so much.

Why do you believe the correct fittings are inadequate? If you check
70.25.02 of your old manual on cd, you will clearly see split pins used to secure the spring plates on the pads.

Am i hearing that when the brakes are applied you may get a clunk type noise from the pads moving? The reason I ask is that i have this just on one side the left or in my case drivers side when i hit the brakes. All other parts have been replaced bushings. new bolting etc it just started after a while with no noise. i kept thinking it was the drag strut. What about using the brake cement on the back of the pads?

Stuart, although pads seem to have a degree of freedom, I would think the clunk is something else, not pads, otherwise most cars would do it. One thing I have come across several times is that if the McPherson strut has shock absorber inserts, these can move around and cause a clunk. This is because the threaded fixing collar bottoms out before the insert is trapped securely. I have fixed it by fitting a shim (or large washer, about 2 or 3mm thick) under the insert.

                        Chris,
I plan to remove the left hand strut assembly and see if I can find what is the cause, when I rebuilt every thing I had no problems I used a washer to bottom out the strut insert and for the first few hundred miles never had a noise then it just started. Its just anoning and it needs to be sorted. Car will be in undergoing alloy wheel transformation from wire wheels so i will have it lifted up in the air i hope I can have this done by Xmas since I want to drive it on Xmas day down to the beach and back. The pressure is on. Just had our first major rain this year i got soaked at work good thing it was on overtime, the things you do for car money.

                        cheers stuart

Stuart, with the front wheels on the ground try grabbing the top of the wheel and rocking hard back and forth to see if you can get the clonk.

When I have fitted the threaded ring, I found that it needed a lot of leverage to get it tight enough, and crush the washer down into a cup shape. If you dont get it tight enough there could be some further settlement of the washer after driving the car.

Other clonks I have found were caused by cross member bolts/nuts not tight enough, and other loose nuts around the suspension and steering.
