Kryten, PM sent, had a look in R.B. web site and this is what they say on the bottom of their pump parts list,
A water pump extraction tool (part no. RB7009 or RB7009PRO), is usually required to extract the pump from the cylinder block (or improvise!). If the pump is difficult to remove, it may leave the brass cage in the cylinder block, this may be carefully prised out. The pump spindle bush (part no. 145022), which is located in the cylinder block should be replaced as a matter of course.
Mike, there is a brass "cage" and a bush (I guess phosphor-bronze). The brass cage is re-used as Russ says, the bush is about 1/2" diameter and sits where the pump spindle bottom end is and is what Rimmers refer to.
Usually the removal of the pump is quite easy by tapping the impeller round with a brass or alloy drift if you don't have an appropriate slide hammer, but the cage remains. I have made a very simple zero impact tool that extracts the cage without damaging it at all. You are welcome to borrow it.
