Richard at EJW got back to me last week after doing some close inspections. He has confirmed that the aftermarket front studs are indeed without the countersunk head of the originals. (This can be seen also on the Rimmers website picture).
He fitted an aftermarket stud to the front hub annd is happy that there is no cause for concern, that they have done many that way without problem, although the stud doesn't fit as the Mr. Triumph intended.
I think I will get hold of a used original stud for my Stag, but I thought it worth posting the result that the stud is not in circulation due to an error but is indeed the best that the aftermarket can do.
