Through more luck than judgement I discovered a wire with the outer covering melted off in places and the bare wire showing.
The location was behind the passenger parcel shelf and it was a wire (slate coloured) coming off one of the ignition relays on the circuit board. The cable should have been connected to a circuit breaker which prevents the electric window motors becoming overloaded. In my case the circuit breaker was missing and the cable was joined directly to the cable which would have been the output from the circuit breaker. If that was not bad enough the cables had been bared, twisted together and covered with some strange looking blue tape.
This must have occurred a few years ago because the blue tape was now hanging off and when removed the two wires separated in my hand.
It is possible that it was a temporary repair by a previous owner which got forgotten about and the melted cable was as bad as it would have got but needless to say a new circuit breaker will be ordered and the damaged wiring replaced.
Of course what I don’t know is why the circuit breaker was removed in the first place but I am sure I will find out.
Anyway, the reason for the post was to alert other owners to the possibility that their circuit breaker may have been bypassed and would be worth checking. I don’t know how reliable these circuit breakers are and it is even possible that as some point they were not available therefore to keep the electric windows working the failed breaker removed and the two wires joined together (hopefully more professionally than mine was).
