    Leaking inlet manifold

Just in the process of repairing a water leak on the inlet manifold, only been leaking for 20 years! Now I know why it's never been fixed, broke two bolts (had to drill out) what a nightmare. Just ordered some parts from Rimmers, and Payan gaskets and water pump kitfrom Tony Hart. Going the whole hog, complete new water and breather hoses throughout. Fitted a brand spanking new 4 core rad 200 miles ago. Although the car has never overheated and to some should have left well, well alone, the leaking manifold always niggled me.

No evident problems with the 6 vane water pump, do I use the rebuild kitI have ordered whilst manifold and water pump housingis offor leave alone?? That is the question! Any think else I should note or do?

Just overhauled my pump, it had a slight leak. It seemed to be a logical thing to do while all stripped down. The old one did show 33 years of wear when stripped, would be a PITA if you had to take it all down again if it leaked in the near future.

I have to say I'm of the opinion if the pump isn't leaking then leave well alone - at least you know the manifold will come off OK now and it's only 20 minutes to remove it to get to the pump.....

Leavingthe pumpalone gets my vote as well. I'd just fixed the leak on the manifold and leave it at that.

Many thanks for your advice I'll leave the pump alone!

How do I know if the pump is leaking, water in oil???? "water leaking pass theshaft seals" Sorry if this is an idiotic question :?:?

Water in the vee is the usual - the vent for the pump is at the top of the blockand leaked water collects in the same place as leaking manifold gaskets.

Commonly people mistake water in the vee as the water pump leaking - this misconception is backed up when they strip it down and replace the pump, but of course they change the inlet manifold gaskets in the process.............thereby curing the original fault.

A fiver for inlet manifold gaskets is much cheaper than going straight for the pump if there is doubt..

                Just my threepenny worth........

Thanks Russ, mine is definately manifold gasket as I witnessed water rust stain from the rear gasket using a mirror.

I have to agree with greenking pin shoulders on this one, you may have 15k worth of motoring in your pump, divide that up into your average mileage,
