    Refitting overhead cam

After three months of struggling, several cans of freeing agent and 20 yards of rope I finally got the offside head off. I've bought a recon one and started to fit it. Now the doubt creeps in. While the head was off, the chain and sprocket were attached to the retaining bracket.

When the head was off, the enging was rotated several times. Now I'm ready to refit the cam and sprocket. Do I simply line up the two marker lines as in the photo? ATTACH=CONFIG]12255[/ATTACH]

If the lines on the offside cam line up should they also line up on the nearside. nearside.jpg As you can see, mine don't.

    Any advice gratefully accepted.

Tony ,at some point the crank tdc mark and the cam marks should all line up but as the cam rotates at half the speed of the crank its not always the case.Easiest thing to do is start from scratch and get them all lined up. As you have only taken off 1 head you are going to have to get the cam mark for the head that is still on and the crank tdc marks lined up by rotating everything and then fit the second head with its mark also lined up otherwise valves may be touching pistons.

    Cheers Steve

Also note that it is the narrow groove on the cam that is the timing mark, not the big wide one

        Thank you.

Is there a mark on the cam itself or just the retaining bearing cap? This is what I'm finding confusing. You can refit the cam and line up the bearing marks with the sprocket but surely the cam itself might be out of position. There's nothing in the Haynes manual that mentions a third marker, if you see what I mean.

As Farmer says, the wide gap in your picture is not the timing mark, keep turning the cam and the correct mark is similar to the one on the cam cap.

Take care not to bend any valves
