    Clutch Master Cylinder - Eeeeekkkk!

Just started to sort out the pedal box and its entrapments. As I was disassembling the car last year I bought the needed bits as I went along, and one of them was a new clutch master cylinder. Since then it's been in its brown paper in the box room in the house. Just went to trial fit it and noticed that the plastic blanking plug was covered in gunge.

Decided to investigate further and finally ended up taking it apart.....ARRRGGGHHH!!!!

At £62 that's an expensive piece of junk. It was from one of the major suppliers, so I don't see a problem in getting it replaced but for now, I'm a "bit demotivated" !!

I'm leaving the supplier time to reply. I'm sure it's not a supplier fault as they only buy from wholesale and sell on. The cylinder has not been properly assembled with inhibitors and that happens in the manufacturing plant. I've bought New Old Stock master cylinders from Ate off eBay before and they were 30 years old but look like new.

As expected, the Supplier (JP) got back to me immediately today. It transpires that they bought a batch of New Old Stock cylinders and have had a few cases of such condition. It seems that it is a degradation of the fluid/grease, perhaps due to contact with water or moisture. Based on their experience, it is possible to clean off the gunge, and there are a couple of new seal kits on their way to me now.

I'll pop the bits into the ultrasonic bath and see how they turn out. I suppose it's "only" the clutch system and not the brakes!!

It has, however, been a bit of a wake-up call as I've been naïvely relying on new cylinders (like rear wheel cylinders) being ok inside when I've installed them. I might revise my "goods inwards" inspection process now!

There's posh for you. The rest of us have to make do with the dishwasher when SWMBO is out. That's if we have a dishwasher........

I feel that the carpet is being pulled out from under my feet here. You mean to say that SWMBO does not stand for "She Who Masters Bosch Operating instructions" ???
