    dash refinishing

I have all the seven dash wood sections out and have the veneer and stain completed. I used a polyacrylic sealer and finisher for wood finishes i have applied about four coats so far but I keep getting what look like small air bubbles when the finish dries. I have used 600 1000 and tried 2000 in between the coats and air blasted to remove any dust and debris. I am using the correct brush for this application anybody have a way to achieve a better finish. I already had to reveneer the gauge panel and glove compartment door after the veneer lifted and split on me when I was sanding it. I dont need a perfect finish but would like it to look decent. Any help apprieciated.

    cheers Stuart

I find the water based products have bubbles you can't get rid of,maybe try a oil/spirit based product...if you aren't already.

Rustins 2 pack only creates bubbles on application 1) if too much is put on 2) if the paint stripper has not been cleaned effectively.

      Which lacquer are you using?

i have used a gloss roller, the finish is brilliant, air bibbles but they disapate with Rustin's. i have posted pictures on previous posts if you search.
thin coats was what i did, about 12 to 20 will be needed, leave them just touch dry, then coat again, then sand them back, 300, 600, 1200 then polish with t-cut, turned out great

        hope this helps

I will do a search on Rustins and check out the properties. I am using a product over hear made by Minwax polycrylic water base and have sent an email to them. Alan I saw the set you did great stuff so once you coat the veneer and rub with wet and dry is the T cut like a mild buffing or rubbing compound? Just did a search and found t cut I should be able to find similar product Alan did you use a buffer or did you hand finish ?

          cheers Stuart

            Hi Stuart,
it may be that because it is water based. The veneer will soak up water then want to dry out. Rustins starts to cure properly after 24 hours so you have a small time frame to work with. if you miss the curing time it's fully off after 3 or 4 days dependant on tempreture of your work room. dont rush it, it does take time.
The t-cut is a scratch remover for paint work a very mild abrasive, i found it best to do it by hand, i thought of a polisher, but i thought the heat of it would affect it so it was all by hand. it was a lot better to polish than the sanding. i have found though to sand half way through then a few more coats and sand again. It has worked well, best of luck Stuart i did mine over a period of weeks.

Thanks for the information and help, I went to the DIY store last night and found a spray polyurethane made by Minwax the same company that made the acrylic I was using and decided to give it a try, the results look very good I went for the clear gloss look. This product does not require final polishing, although its not up to your high gloss finish Alan, but I may be done with the dash you always learn something.Next time if I have to do a dash I will be ready.I will post some pics over the week end.

                cheers Stuart
