    Roof stuff

Has anyone here re-fitted the ceiling (the fabric) of the hard top?

If so - how hard was it and where did they get the kit. I can't imagine it being too hard because you can lay the roof on the floor but you never know (well I don't!!!).....

It's that time of year that the hard top has to come out (yes, its a daily car!)

    Many thanks in advance

    Steve

    Hi Steve,

Yep, I've refitted my headlining after I had a bare metal refurb on my hardtop.

I produced some notes a while ago as there were several people doing the same job back then so I'll search and see if I can find them and, if I do, then I'll PM them to you.

It's not too hard a job but it took me about 2 weeks or so with dipping in and out of the job, spending between 1 and 5 hours per day.

I got my replacement headlining from Aldridges and, apart from one little glitch that I mention in the notes, it was absolutely first class - I'd thoroughly recommend them.

    Good luck.

    Cheers

    Julian

I notice in your first photo that the hardtop glass is not fitted - I assume that a replacement headlining can be fitted with the glass in situ?

        Hi Peter,

I mentioned this very subject to Steve in the PM I've sent him.

One of the most important things about getting the headlining looking good is to get it all good and taught (Tip, do the job in a warm atmosphere as when it cools it will shrink a bit and taughten it still further).

Anyway, one good way to taughten the rear of it is to pull the excess headlining material through the rear screen aperture and to glue it to the metal screen surround whilst taught. So, if you can remove the rear screen then you'll probably end up with a better result. I found removing and refitting the glass fairly easy although the same can't be said for the rear screen chrome surrounds

I've not done it without removing the screen but if you don't want to take it out then you could cut the headlining and carefully peel back the screen rubber and glue the headlining underneath it but you may well end up with a bit of slack in the rear section. Of course you can tighten it laterally by pulling through the quarterlight apertures.

Please feel free to come back to me if you think I can help any further and good luck.

        Cheers

        Julian

A bit of background. My inner covering hangs down in various places - having to use carpet clue to make it fit again.

Also - the covering thats in there seems to be in bits. The square of the roof, the rear windows have separate pieces along with the front door too.

Its bloody awful. And stained. Mess.

          My main question is.....

Who should I get the cover off (supplier) ? I saw one on ebay but it looks a bit generic

          As ever - thanks

            Hi Steve,

No doubt in my mind - it's got to be an Aldridge one. http://www.aldridge.co.uk/services/schematic.cfm?id=3 - £49.80.

            Cheers

I got the same product but mine doesn't look like pictures. it occupied the living room for a while - slapped a pair dynamax'x on then the screen.

I just couldn't find a way to make it taught.

(We tried Maths, English, chemistry but no joy)

I really hope you see the joke!!!!

                    Erm, yes.

It's like a school thing 'could do better'.

I did it in the middle in the living room, on top of a rug(insert your own gag). I took all the old fabric out and even bought 2 slabs of dynamax which I stuck in place before carefully getting the main part of the fabric in place - using carpet glue where necessary. The bit I found difficult was the the rear bits. Needing cutting and wotnot.

It's not very taught in main part which would be nice but there you go.
