    Water pump brass insert removal??

Have removed the pump this afternoon aand am waiting for my new slide hammer to arrive hopefully tomorrow with the post.

One question though, when tapping the brass insert out, do you position the slide hammer 45 deg hook into the holes in the brass ports, or position the hook right at the bottom at the base of the insert.
Have'nt seen one of these inserts in the flesh, so not sure if it's safe to come from the base of the brass cage. Obviously I do not want to damge the insert if I can get away with it, as it looks to be in goor repair.
    Any suggestions gents

    Hi Mike,

I'm afraid I haven't any answers for you on this as I haven't done the job but BECAUSE I haven't done the job it would be really good if you could post some photos of the job.

Maybe you could even write up a 'how to' for the new forum thingy?

    Cheers

    Julian

      Mike,
the cage should pull out its an O ring fit you can put the puller into the slots on the side. While you are there check the lower bushing that's in the block if need be replace it. A couple of things i found there is flinger ring on the pump shaft assembly that I think only Paddocks have also i replaced the ball bearing with an SKF since a no name bearing comes with the rebuild kit but that's your choice. LD parts do a modification that may be worth a try I had to skim cut the back face of my impeller If you do not have a small arbor press you will have to make something up, I made tooling for assembly but then that's what I do for a living. All in all you may want to consider doing a unit exchange or how ever they do it on your side of the pond.I rebuilt my own and like I say it was very straight forward but I have access to machine tools etc so no big stretch.
      Good luck Stuart

Cheers Stuart, am considering the proffesional refurb option. Spoke to Tony Hart at Enginuity and may well go down this route, at least I'll know that it's ready to drop straight back in.
However I also fancy doing the rebuild myself, but only have basic mechanical skills and tools. I am a bit reluctant to go through all this only to find ou that it's not 100%. and leaks again. LOL

I think the LD parts mod is a must if you want to retain the original water pump. the first pic is typical of a removed pump, how would anything seal on that! the 2nd pic shows the impeller being prepared for the ceramic insert and the final pic shows the ceramic insert in position. Now it easy to think the you will get a seal on that baby! - Alan

              What's a slide hammer?

All these pics of corroded bits makes me wonder what my pump is like. However, as all seems to be well down there, I will leave it alone.

I was out and about in the Stag yesterday in 20°C sunshine.

Mike, Not to my knowledge. Of course you can just mount the impeller in a lathe and face off the underside to get a clean surface that will not 'rip up' your new graphite seal but IMO the graphite against ceramic compared with the graphite against cast steel is no contest.
However I would never consider replacing the graphite seal without cleaning up the underside of the impeller, a new seal will be ripped to pieces in no time by a corroded surface on the impeller.

Recieve my new slide hammer from ebay this morning. What a waste of time it is, can't get the brass cage insert to budge, and idea guys or any pics of the appropriate tool.
The only thing I can think of is a long bearing puller. Problem is I don't have one and not sure around my area would have one.

To be honest Mike, I thought the slide hammer was only for fitting to the left hand threaded bolt to extract the pump.

As I've mentioned, I've not done this so don't quite know what to suggest re removing the cage but I've managed to use pullers for all sort of things. Nowadays it's amazing just where you can get them - my local Pound shop was selling them a while ago !

                    Good luck,

                    Julian

                      Hoi Mike,

I did it with this tool. Don't know the name in english. But it is for getting bearings out of there place. And worked just fine to get the brass cage out without damage.
                      good luck.

A Slide Hammer is an 18" (or so) round bar with end stops and a sliding metal weight that can be moved along the bar as the hammer. Different accessory fittings such as hooks, bends, screws can be fitted to one end and once the chosen tool is applied to the workpiece, the hammer is slid along the bar until it bangs on the outer end stop, thus imparting a pulling impact through the accessory. It is mostly used to apply an extracting force when there is litte or awkward access to the far side of the workpiece.

They start at about £9.00 stg and can be found by googling 'Slide Hammer' and seeing what comes up.

Enjoy the sunshine you lucky man, The rain has melted yesterdays snow from the tops here.

Alex I think it's called an internal bearing puller, and guess what??? I don't have one and know of no one local who has them.
I did'nt think the internal brass cage would be so difficult to remove, mind you probably is'nt if you have the correct tools at hand.
Cheers for heads up, will wait and see if anyone else has and other ideas or practical experience removing these

                            Mike,
by the looks of the pump internals the cage most likely has a lot of build up on it, try soaking with a good release agent then if you have a small piece of square bar stock cut it to fit into the opening and make it long enough to fit in across the bore the use something to try and turn it. The internal puller will work but you will have to find one, does your local auto supply shop not loan out tools? Another thought you could try getting a long 1/4 or 5/16 bolt and hook the head of the bolt under the opening of the cage the other end going into your slide hammer try on side then go 180 and try the other.

                            good luck Stuart

I always use a small 2 leg puller with the legs reversed so they fit in the holes in the side of the brass cage. Then place a flat bar across the flange on the block for the puller thread to push against and the cage will pull out easily.
