Hi Peter,
The oil will be coming from the differential. There is a seal in the end of the diff which is accessible when you take the extension off. If this seal fails oil runs along the quill shaft and can wash the grease out of the bearing there. As you have it out of the car I think it would be prudent to change the bearing as well just to be on the safe side. Buy a decent bearing, I made the mistake of buying a cheap one and it fell apart - literally and had to be replaced again.

If your oil seal is the original seal its a bit of a bear to remove they just made them really good also it is leather I believe Chris Witor has them if you want to go that route I fitted a viton double lip seal which you can find from any good supply house or you can use what the local suppliers provid i.e. Rimmer Bros LD Paddock etc Like Dave said buy a good brand named bearing SKF etc i have the seal # some where i will post it later
cheers Stuart

I bought a quill shaft bearing and it had no name or origin on it, so I did not instal it. I then bought the correct (made in Blighty) bearing from Chris Witor. Can't remember its name at the moment, but it is on his website. You can find it in the archives as well.

The leather seals will last as will a viton seal. The leather one which if it is still housed in steel is a bit harder to fit and remove the viton one a bit easier. I work in and oil refinery with lots of rotating equipment and we use viton lip seals in many different applicatiions so I am not worried about using it in this one. In the end its up to you but I would say that getting a replacement seal would be easier if its made from viton. If you do decide on viton go with a branded make like National orthe like.
