Help with piston seals inside the brake calipers, please!

    Hello,

After I refurbished the brake calipers on my Stag, I have a problem with refitting the piston seals: There came two types of rubber seals with the set - one with a double lip inside and on which is simply square (seen in the cross section).

Which of the two is the inner one - the square one or the one with the double lip? Which is the outer one, that serves as a dust seal and is housed by the metal ring.

I assume the double lipped seal is the inner one, but I might be mistaken. Please advise.

    Kind regards,
    Dieter.

    Hi Dieter,

The square one is the inner, main, seal.

The double lipped one (which, IIRC is a little more pliable) is the outer dust seal and goes in the metal dust seal casing. Getting this outer one fitted can be tricky and Peter at LD sent me some info about this - I'll see if I can find it for you.

    Cheers

    Julian

        Hello Julian,

So I got it wrong! Thank you for your valuable info!

In the TR6 calipers the inner seal is of the square type, too.

        Best wishes,
        Dieter.

          Dieter,
is it of any help for you to have the original Lockheed "General guidance istructions for fitting disk brake caliper piston/piston seal..."? If so, do you have a Fax no?

That might be a handy document to have........

Any chance of scanning it and posting it here? Or does it need translating?

              Hello Julian and Klaus,

You are great! Thank you for your assistance. I managed to get the new pistons back into the caliper - with the seals in the right place. I had done before what you should actually not do: I had dismantled the caliper halves. This made working on the cylinders much easier.

I realized that it is easier to get the pistons into the cylinders when both (!) seals are built in before. Especially the outer seal (wiper seal) with its retainer ring can be a pain in the neck otherwise.

When I refitted the two halves I used new 7/16" high tensile steel bolts and 100 Nm torque.

              Best wishes,
              Dieter.

                  Hello Dave,

No, I had to do with "normal" steel ones.

                  Kind regards,
                  Dieter.

Sorry Dave, normally I keep my promise. This post is more than two years old but I will try to post the two Lockheed pages now:

I did my caliper yesterday - had to buy a £8 tin of red rubber grease for just a fingerful.

Mind you, the grease made for much easier assembly...
