how do i get the boss off the top of the steering ram, i can get the wheel off no problems, but i tried tapping it off and its stuck fast, do i just hammer it off?
Mine just pulled off by hand but I have had to use a three legged puller on other cars. Be careful when you are pulling at it by hand, if it does comes unstuck it is very easy to smack your self in the face because it will let go all of a sudden!
thanks Neil, and for the tip, still could be worse, i could be a pretty boy
i thought it was a pull off, its stuck fast so i will leave it till i have more time too many projects on the go at the mo
With the wheel back on, slacken the retaining nut - but don't remove it (it stops the wheel smacking you in the face as described above).
Strike the underside of the wheel rim sharply with your right palm. Then repeat with the left. Alternate a few times and it should eventually give up and release from the taper.
If this doesn't work, then you may need a puller, but it hasn't failed me in the past.

thanks Dave, good idea, leaving the nut on, i did try tapping it with the back of the spanner no joy. i will wait for the boss to arrive and try again.
Hi Alan, as Dave says, assemble the wheel/boss, undo the nut about three quarters of the way, then while pulling hard on the left side of the rim, strike the spoke on the right, close to the hub, hard, with a rubber hammer, it WILL come off, don't use any metal tools, you'll damage it. A puller will do it but is a bit extreme Martin.
