JP Timing chain kits which one's best

gent's am going to replace timing chains seeing as how I have everything else in bits.
Have looked through JP spare parts list and they supply 2 x different types, German long life and Rolon.
Any ideas which would be the better, German or Rolon.

Peter at LD parts does the German Iwis chains as well, he normally does a fair bit of reserch before offering an item.

I have them with no issues running on new rolon tensioner shoes in original Reynold holders.

    Cheers Steve

Ooooh you'll start a fight asking questions like that!

Personally when I next do mine I'll get the actual chains from ldparts as these are the genuine Iwis german chains. All other "german" chains seem to have copied the design of the Iwis chains but I have a concern over quality. Many however say the rolons are fine. Somebody is going to come on here and say "german chains are pre-stretched and give no rattly warning before they fail. I believe strongly that this is nonsense.

I'm more interested how you've managed to "look through JP's parts list" !!! Site's still down for me
        The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

I would personally shy away from chains that do not have a manufacturers name. A plastic bag with 'German' written on it doesn't fill me with confidence. Maybe one day we will find that there is a company in India called 'German' making chains for us. Or does someone know that they are made by a quality manufacturer and who they are?

On the subject of timing gear I recently fitted chains / guides for a friend. All was ok except the straight guide on the r/h bank was rather badly made. When fitted it was obvious that there was a serious risk that the chain would fall off the edge of the rubber strip on the guide. The strip was several mm narrower than an original and the guide itself wasn't quite the right shape either. Fortunately I had a spare original guide to use.

Unless you have OE quality parts don't trust anything.

Ok more or less answered my question will go for LD chains and tensioners, if they are supplied in a kit, unless of course someone else has indead used the JP German ones that come in a kit without any problems.

Drew I have a hard copy of the Paddocks spares list which they sent about a year ago. I have not recieved a new one so would imagine they still supply all parts listed in this catalogue.

Just wondering why Stag chains need changing every 25,000 miles and other cars do not. Is it something specific to Stags? Mine's got 20,000 to go, so I'm not bothered - yet.

                Hi Don,

Timing chains "stretch" as the tiny bearing surfaces in each link wear. The stag timing chains are very long and so tiny amounts of wear in these bearings make the chain longer than they would on a shorter chain as it has less links. Therefore they need changing more frequently.

The IWIS chains have superior (double roller I think) bearings and so don't wear as fast and therefore "stretch" as much. It is said you can leave them in for much longer than 25,000 miles and that is certainly my experience of them as I had them fitted when mine was a daily driver back in the early 90's.

Was onto JP web site and had a look at his chains and guides, however there was nothing listed referencing hydraulic tensioners. According to the Tony Hart video the rubber guides on the tensioners should be changed out if ware is apparent.

Do you know if anyone still supplies these items gents.

                  Mike

Here's another option, Looking at the seller,I would have thought the quality would be quite good:

                              Hi Mike
Sorry to confuse the issue but I tend to go along with Tony Hart's recommendation which is the Rolon option.
