    Rocker covers

Hello my rocker covers are leaking (I think) oil in the v and running down the n/s but can't see any oil whilst looking with a torch with inlet manifold still attached (around distributor is dry)could it be coming from the head gasket? They where replaced properly 18months ago so i thought I'd better re torque the heads they went about half a turn each I'm guessing its the rocker cover gaskets.when I fitted the rocker cover gaskets a few months ago I also put sealer on them, when I noticed the leak I tried to tighten the rocker covers but a couple of the main screws are fully home so the covers are obviously slightly bent but they are chrome and I'm worried that if I try to straighten them they might flake. Has anyone ever straightened them or is there a fix for these?? Thanks dean

Hiya Dean, it sounds as if you've got the wrong CAM COVER gaskets fitted, they come in two thicknesses and I think you've got the thin one. Wards have the right ones, and I expect others do as well (alright Bob ?) Martin.

Deanoed, I fitted silcone gaskets on the cam covers in the summer. Fitted them the first time but still had slight leak. Could'nt fathom out why. Measured across the cam covers and found out that they had been over tightened at some point 3-4 mm difference from the outside edges to the centre. Very easy to bend slowly into position to match across the outside edges. Not sure about chrome though, but I would imagine there will be a certain amount of give in them.
The slicone gaskets were expensive, however they are re-useable and I have had no more oil seapage from the cam covers since. Am away to remove them again to access cam buckets, fingers crossed they are reuseable for the third time.
You'll find them on flea bay, well worth it as far as I am concerned

                Hi, Deanoed,

Same problem as I had - bent cam covers on account of a previous owner overtightening the capping nuts. And the reason that that had been done was because the locating studs had been screwed too far into the head, meaning the slotted capping nuts with the O - rings had to be overtightened to get them to grip. So the cover bent.

I didn't want to use as much gasket gooop as the PO did so I carefully bent the covers back into shape and remedied the original problem. I'm still using cork gaskets and they're sealing OK now that thay have a straight edge to work from, but I might contemplate these silicone ones that I hear mentioned. All comments I read seem to be positive on those.

                With best wishes,
                Duncan, Skye

I squeezed my chrome ones together and the chrome survived intact. They were about 5 mm oversized at the centre compàred to iirc 90mm at the ends. I didn't think about the chrome flaking so just give them a good squeeze with a giant g clamp, protecting the chrome with a couple of bits of wood and then left them overnight. Of course this doesn't mean yours won't flake for certain but I did do bothe sides without a problem. I have also fitted silicone seals so all OK at the moment. Just the steering leaking now, got soem Lucas steering leak cure for that!

My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.

It isn't just belly-out you need to check for - look for toe-up at either end also.
