    Extra Temp gauge connections

Just got a Stag, not a clue what I'm doing....

It's fitted with an oil pressure/ temp gauge as a replacement for the clock, I think !

The question is where should the temp pick up probe be fitted to the engine , at the moment it's just stuffed behind the engine on the passenger side.

    Any help gratefully accepted.

It screws into the water transfer housing at the rear of the LH head, you will probably need an adaptor though.

The normal temperature gauge is fitted to the water transfer housing at the rear of the left hand cylinder head. The original would be an electrical gauge. However, if you have two fitted it may be the previous owner had fitted capillary gauges(liquid filled pressure tubes). I have two of these fitted and the second one(which is in place of the clock) is fitted to the water transfer housing at the rear of the right hand cylinder. This tells you if you have a balanced temperature between the two heads. To achieve this you have to join the two transfer housings by means of a hose across the rear of the engine. A tee junction is used on this hose to take the coolant through the heater radiator. It does mean you have to adapt the transfer housings to connect the capillary tube and the hose connecting them.

I suggest you talk to the MBGHive asaking them for an MGB temperature gauge adaptor.

For the MGB no adaptor is needed (It may have come ready done for me (Bought from The Gauge Shop)), or at least it wasn't with either of my MGs (a Midget 1500 where I went from a capillary system to an electric system and on my '79 MGB I went from an electric sender to a capillary sender).

In theory (best to call or ask something first) the sender will probably screw straight into the LH water transfer housing. I think a bit of the confusion comes from people fitting their capillary sender into a modified RH transfer housing hence gaining the temperature of both cylinder heads.

One thing I will say however is that all the Smiths Combi gauge temp senders I have seen come with a tapered fitting into the cylinder block despite the thread being shared across the range. The Stag/Dolly engines come with a 'flat' fitting into the head. This hasn't however stopped people from fitting in MGB tapered senders into Stags...

Please note Stag should have a black insert:

I have both transfer housings off at the moment and I can assure you that a capillary fitting will not fit without an adaptor. I got mine from Chick Doig the local Triumph/MG dealer.

I guess the thread diameter is different between the two? I assumed it would fit after I took out what looked to be like an MGB temperature sender from my Stag when flushing/renewing the cooling system.
