I rebuilt mine which lasted 10 years / 50,000 miles. When it failed I changed to electronic.

If you use your car irregularly or it lay it up overwinter for example I would fit electronic. The original points type do not seem to like not being used.

I would first of all check the voltage at the fuel pump terminals to ensure it has a good supply of electric.

After that I would look into refurbing your old pump with a kit you do not mind getting your hands dirty (www.sucarb.co.uk should supply you with the right bits and allow you to go electric with the pump), or buy a new pump from the likes of the Stag suppliers. From the sounds of it it seems your pump could do with a refurb or clean.

John Twist on Youtube does show how to bring back some life to a failing pump:

Use I can say does help keep them in good order. I guess the points oxidise up through a lack of use and moist air etc.

I had exactly the same symptoms as you a couple of months ago. It seemed to have 12v at the pump when I checked it, so I bought a new pump. Connected it and...nothing. Someone with a bit more knowledge than me looked and, that time, found that there was no power to the pump. Checking through it turned out it was a very poor connection at the inertia cut-out switch and, once rewired, all has been fine.

if a tap sorts it out it will be the points - change to an electronic one, job done (unless you enjoy messing around with the points frequently)

as Andy says above - mine was like this, changed the points and was fine for a while then let me down again few taps and would work for about a mile, tap again etc to get home - after that changed to a electronic one!

Hi, the sucarb site Chas mentions is a very good one. A cheaper solution, is to buy their electronic kit and convert your own pump, I did this about 5 years ago and it's been completely reliable. Martin.
