    Driveshaft dust boots

Finally got Stanley the Stag back down on his wheels this weekend after two months up in the air! What was supposed to be a simple suspension rebuild turned into an underseal removal, welding and re-undersealing exercise.... you know how it goes!

However, I have managed to rip both the "driveshaft dust boots" (part number 213844)that cover the inner UJs.

My question is, do I need them? The inner UJ's are tucked out of the way of most muck that might be thrown at them, and in any case the bootsarenot a fully closed item.

    Any thoughts?

    G'day Cheesy,

I'm told that you don't really need them, apparently the saloons don't have them fitted. Also they aren't on the prop shaft to protect those UJs.

I have now got the Datsun half shaft conversion and can't refit mine. If you really want some you can have my old ones.

    regards,

    Raoul

Interesting point - the Rover P6had exposed inner UJs and it was never an issue - I don't see that they are strictly necessary, but maybe someone else has an opinion...

        Wow, quick replies guys!

Thanks for the input. Think I'll go with the consensus and forget about them.

Besides, I can do without adding more jobs to my list! Spring weather looks like it is almost here; inside a garage is no place for a Stag on a sunny day!

        Thanks again.

You may have to remove them before your MOT. The testers will always fail a car with a split driveshaft gaiter, the fact that the Stag does not have a bucket full of black goo inside probably would not stop them failing it. - Alan

            Thanks Alan.

The dust covers were in pretty perished condition anyway so I removed what was left of them after they ripped.

            The dreaded MOT now looms.....

Mine has never had any since iv'e had it .

Talking of split gatters, one of my front shock gatters was split so i removed them both and it past the MOT so if it's not fitted it's ok but if it's fitted it must be in good condition.

I'd always assumed they were to stop stones getting flung into the UJs; but then as Marco Polo says, the prop shaft isn't protected. On the other hand, being nearer the wheels, perhaps they are more prone to being hit?
